Visit of the Minister of Justice in Suhl-Goldlauter: A look behind the walls!

In the spirit of security aspects and rehabilitation, Beate Meißner, the new Minister of Justice of Thuringia, visited the Suhl-Goldlauter correctional facility together with State Secretary Christian Klein. The visit took place last week and marks the start of a series of inaugural visits to Thuringia's correctional facilities. The minister wanted to find out more about the special features and challenges of enforcement directly on site insuedthueringen.de reported.

The Goldlauter Correctional Facility primarily houses pre-trial detainees and men who have been briefly convicted and receive prison sentences of up to two and a half years. During their tour of the institution, Meißner and Klein had the opportunity to introduce themselves to modern security concepts and the programs to promote education, work and leisure activities. According to the minister, the latter are particularly important in order to enable the successful rehabilitation of prisoners.

Challenges and solutions

During their visit, the two politicians spoke about numerous topics that affect everyday life in prison. These include safety aspects, medical care and the need for meaningful measures to reduce the risk of reoffending, especially for prisoners with short sentences. “We have to offer the people who come to us a real perspective,” emphasized State Secretary Klein. The focus is on ensuring that no one leaves the institution in a worse condition than when they entered it, something that is also the case Thuringian correctional system is firmly anchored.

The aim of the prison system is to resocialize prisoners and prepare them for a life without crime. Various partners such as the Federal Employment Agency, social services and educational institutions play an important role. The minister emphasized that it is important that living conditions in prison are as close as possible to those in freedom in order to enable a positive transition into society.

The importance of the penal system

Beate Meißner emphasized that the importance of the prison system for a functioning constitutional state should not be underestimated. “The appreciation of employees must be brought to the fore,” she said. It should not be forgotten that working in the prison system brings with it a variety of challenges, especially when it comes to offering prisoners an environment in which they can develop and reflect on their sentences.

“It is important that our institutions are perceived not only as places of punishment, but also as educational and rehabilitation facilities,” continued Meißner. The Goldlauter Institution has already done pioneering work through various programs that are based on the desired goals in the penal system. Overall, the visit by Meißner and Klein is a step in the right direction to optimize future working methods in the Thuringian justice system and to open up new perspectives for prisoners.

The topics discussed show the efforts of Thuringia's judiciary to proactively face the challenges of enforcement and at the same time to provide employees and prisoners with the necessary support.
