Blood moon over central Germany: A unique celestial event!
On September 7, 2023, much of Central Germany and Europe experienced a fascinating natural spectacle: a total lunar eclipse, also known as a blood moon. Loud MDR A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is directly between the sun and the moon. Such eclipses are only visible during the full moon, which in this case occurred on September 7th.
With clear skies, the eclipse was wonderful to observe across much of Asia and Australia, as well as Europe. In Radebeul the moon was visible at 7:34 p.m., while in Merseburg the sighting began at 7:41 p.m. The total eclipse only appeared from 8 p.m.: The moon first entered the Earth's penumbra, followed by totality, which reached its peak at 8:11 p.m. and lasted until 8:52 p.m.
A red spectacle in the sky
The highlight of this special night was the reddish colors of the moon, caused by the light filtering in the Earth's atmosphere. This coloring is characteristic of a blood moon, like Time and Date notes. During the observation, the region to the left of the moon could also see Saturn, which was visible from 9 p.m. The next blood moon will not be visible again until New Year's Eve 2028.
For everyone who didn't want to miss the event, the Merseburg Planetarium and the Radebeul Observatory opened their doors at 7 p.m. and offered telescope observations from 7:30 p.m. in Merseburg and from 8 p.m. in Radebeul. There was great interest and many astronomy-loving citizens did not miss this spectacle.

If you want to observe a lunar eclipse, you should prepare for the weather conditions. Clear nights offer the best visibility.
