E-bike accident in Bettenhausen: 61-year-old injured after bee sting!

In the last few days there have been repeated serious accidents involving e-bikes in Germany, which is once again bringing the issue of road safety into focus. An incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in quiet Bettenhausen that put a 61-year-old man in an awkward position. As the Suhl State Police Inspectorate reported in a recent report, the man was riding his e-bike down the pond path when he was apparently stung by a bee. As a result, he lost control of his bike and fell. A rescue helicopter immediately took the injured man to the hospital, where he received medical care.

The exact circumstances of the accident are currently unclear, and the amount of material damage caused is also not clear. Such an incident raises questions about the safety of e-bike riders. There has been a significant increase in Pedelec accidents in recent years. According to Destatis, a total of 23,658 Pedelec users had accidents in 2023, a number that has increased more than tenfold compared to 2014.

Current accident statistics

Another aspect that sheds light on the situation are the statistics on e-bike accidents: The proportion of Pedelec accident victims under the age of 45 rose from 11% in 2014 to almost a third (30.1%) in 2023. This shows that not only older drivers are affected, but also young people. The average age of those involved in an accident is now 53 years old, which is further fueling the debate about safety measures when riding e-bikes.

The situation is further highlighted by the fact that non-motorized bicycles have a reduced accident rate. The number of accidents involving non-motorized bicycles fell from 76,600 in 2014 to 72,200 in 2023. The number of fatalities in this category also fell, from 357 to 256. However, the risk of accidents when riding e-bikes appears to be increasing significantly.

These two incidents are not isolated cases, but part of a larger problem. The increasing number of accidents suggests that more information is needed about the risks of riding an e-bike. In view of these developments, both experienced drivers and newbies should rethink their behavior on the road and take the necessary safety precautions - because safety begins with your own actions.
