Cardiovascular: Werra-Meißner-Kreis leads the way in clinical treatments!
Cardiovascular diseases are still the most common cause of death in Germany. This alarming fact highlights the need for increased awareness and better prevention measures. Figures show that around 40 percent of all deaths in Germany each year are due to heart disease. But it's not just mortality that is a worrying issue; regional differences in treatment are also raising eyebrows. The Werra-Meißner district in Hesse is a front runner here, as stern.de reports.
In 2023, the most inpatient treatments were recorded in the Werra-Meißner district with 47 cases per 1,000 inhabitants. For comparison: in cities like Darmstadt and Frankfurt this value was around 22 treatments per 1,000 inhabitants. These regional differences can be attributed, among other things, to the age structure of the population. While in Suhl, Thuringia, 55 cases per 1,000 inhabitants were recorded, the Werra-Meißner district ranks 18th nationwide.
Worrying increase in mortality
The German Heart Foundation reports an increase in mortality from heart disease after a phase of slight decline. In 2022, 216,944 people died from heart disease, a significant increase compared to 205,581 deaths in 2021. Coronary heart disease (CHD) and acute heart attacks are particularly affected, which together claim numerous lives. The death rate from CHD was 133.3 per 100,000 inhabitants and that from heart attacks was 49 per 100,000 inhabitants, as reported by herzstiftung.de.
The reasons for this worrying increase are complex and require more detailed analysis. Improving preventive measures as well as targeted therapy and rehabilitation are essential. In this context, it is emphasized that the most common single diagnosis for inpatient hospital admissions is heart failure, which often occurs as the end stage of other heart diseases.
Risk factors at a glance
If you look at the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, you will find many influenced factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and unhealthy lifestyles. According to rki.de, these are not only widespread in the population, but also offer great potential for prevention. Health-conscious behavior and appropriate drug therapies can have serious effects on the development of the disease.
Institutions like the German Heart Foundation want to combat the rising numbers with a clear focus on education, research and improving treatment options. Special research funding of one million euros gives researchers additional scope to develop new approaches to combat heart failure and related diseases.
It is time to take these alarming developments seriously and take active action against the increasing mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases. A strong awareness among the population is the first step towards sustainably improving one's own health and that of those around us.
