The work is characterized by a dark, modern atmosphere that is based on the classic literature of Thomas Mann, specifically “The Magic Mountain”, an influence that fundamentally shapes the plot of the film. The film is a psychological horror that showcases complex characters and scary ideas. Collider points out that the opening sequence immediately shocks the viewer with a tax official in Manhattan having a heart attack and transfers the dark mood to Switzerland.

The visuals and acting were praised, while the length and narrative structure received much criticism. In the end, the film only managed to gross around $26 million worldwide, which was a major setback given a budget of $40 million Wikipedia.

A promising start, a bitter end
