Raine Wonsey shines in the playoff: Menace wins 3-2 against Magic!
The sports world in our region never stops! Today we take a look at the great performances of the young athletes in the Franklin County Summer League and the remarkable achievements of the Frontier Softball team, which recently triumphed in the MIAA Division IV round of 16.
In a thrilling playoff game, Raine Wonsey and her Menace team prevailed against the Magic - and she didn't just swing the bat brilliantly! Wonsey posted a remarkable 14 strikeouts in six innings and allowed just three hits with two runs scored, none of which were earned. She also delivered an RBI double at the plate and provided additional chances with three walks. Recorder.com reports that Menace scored the game-winning point in the sixth inning. Rileyanne Tine also made an impact with a double and made a valuable contribution to the win.
Successful softball ladies
Also in the spotlight is the Frontier softball team, which faced South Hadley in the MIAA Division IV first round on June 4, 2025. In this duel between the top teams, who were both in 8th and 9th place, Frontier won with a clear 5-0. They immediately took the lead and didn't relinquish it until the final whistle. MassLive.com points out that both teams had excellent pitchers, but Frontier still had the upper hand in this match.
Youth sports on the rise
In a broader context, a recent survey from the National Survey of Children's Health shows that approximately 27.3 million youth ages 6 to 17 were actively involved in sports teams or classes in 2023. This represents over 55.4% of children participating in organized sports. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has set a goal of achieving 63.3% participation by 2030.
