Suhl-Neundorf: Flood protection construction fights against rain floods!

A significant step in flood protection is being taken in Suhl-Neundorf today. At 7:30 a.m. a low loader with an impressive overflow structure rolled into the valley. The 37-tonne structure is intended to help protect the region from the ever-increasing flood risks that have increased in recent years due to climate change. In addition to the work, the street “An der Hasel” will also be fundamentally renovated and equipped with new sewers and pipes. But not everything went according to plan. Heavy rain during the night caused the excavation pit to flood. This required an unplanned use of pumps and excavators to remove mud and water, delaying the installation of the spillway structure by approximately two hours. The installation should now be completed around 9 a.m.

The spillway structure is a central part of a long-term flood protection project in the region. This measure is important not only for current security, but also as a response to the various floods that have often affected residents in the past. The Steinbach, which overflowed its banks several times, is just one example of the challenges associated with extreme weather events. According to MDR, the rains also flooded cellars and damaged roads. It is clear that such measures are urgently needed by the affected communities.

Investments for a secure future

The construction of the overflow structure and the associated measures are part of a larger investment package that the city of Suhl is investing in around 6.8 million euros. Together with the financial returns from the Suhl Water and Waste Water Association and Stadtwerke Suhl/Zella-Mehlis Netz GmbH, the total construction costs amount to around 8.3 million euros. These investments are part of a comprehensive flood risk management that includes not only technical protection, but also a preventative strategy to minimize future risks from extreme weather events, as the Federal Government emphasizes.

The latest developments urge us to hurry: Climate research shows that extreme weather events, such as heavy rain and droughts, will increase. It is therefore essential to actively prepare for such changes. The federal government has prepared for this, among other things through its funding programs for municipalities to set new standards in flood protection and to support the expansion of green spaces for rainwater infiltration.

Outlook for further measures

The installation of the overflow structure opens another chapter in the eternal battle against the forces of nature. The city of Suhl and its partners rely on a holistic approach to not only protect the population, but also to promote the quality of life and the natural use of water. The further construction phases are already being planned and the city administration is confident that the new measures will soon bear fruit.

As the challenges of climate change grow, flood protection is a team effort that brings together diverse stakeholders, from community partners to federal agencies, as they strive to manage future intergenerational risks. A step in the right direction was taken today in Suhl-Neundorf.
