From the pharmacy to the catering industry: a courageous job change brings luck and money!

Vanessa Lapp, a 25-year-old woman, opened a courageous chapter in her professional life on July 17, 2025. After several years as a pharmaceutical technical assistant (PTA), she took the step of quitting her job without having a new position in sight. Instead, she opted for a full-time job in the catering industry, more precisely at the “Chausseehaus zur Income” in Bad Liebenstein. She felt uncomfortable at her previous job and no longer enjoyed her work. This decision reflects a trend Bertelsmann Foundation in their current studies: job changes often lead to higher satisfaction.

Career realignment and better conditions

Vanessa's decision also paid off financially. The pay in the catering industry is almost a third higher than their previous salary in the healthcare sector. A circumstance that is important not only for you, but for many employees. Job changes have been proven to be associated with increases in income and job satisfaction, according to a study by RWI Essen shows.

Changes in the working environment often result in a shortened commute. What's particularly pleasing for Vanessa is that her daily commute to work has been reduced by 20 kilometers. Less time on the road means better quality of life and ultimately more time for the beautiful things in life.

Satisfaction through change

According to the Bertelsmann Foundation, job changers are on average 1.1 points happier on a scale of 0 to 10. This could also play a role for Vanessa. Satisfaction often depends less on salary and more on new tasks and a good relationship with colleagues and superiors. Labor market expert Roman Wink emphasizes that a good working atmosphere has a positive effect on employee retention. In times of a shortage of skilled workers, this is crucial for many companies.

The social changes that take place in... RWI report described, force many employees to reorient themselves professionally. In this context, greater professional mobility becomes a necessary adjustment mechanism.

For Vanessa, the change was a complete success. Her story is another example of how having the courage to change can pay off. Striving for a job in which you feel comfortable and where the pay is fair remains a central concern for many employees today. With her step, she may also inspire others to do the same and boost their own happiness.
