Thuringia takes stock: alcohol ban zones show clear successes!

The discussion about alcohol ban zones is generating positive feedback in Thuringia. In cities like Erfurt, Jena, Eisenach and Gera the mayors show that the situation in the affected areas has noticeably improved and the number of complaints is decreasing. The high level of acceptance among the population underlines this.

Regular checks by the police and public order office are essential to ensure compliance with the prohibited zones. A spokesman from Eisenach, where a temporary ban zone has been set up since June 2024, emphasizes that these measures also take up the necessary resources. Nevertheless, there is a positive balance, especially in Erfurt, where the “drinking scene” in particular causes fewer problems and people roam the streets more calmly.

Shifting the problems

But not everything is idle bliss. In Gera, where there has been an alcohol ban in the city center since July 2017, many citizens feel uncomfortable because the problems are shifting to other places. The calls for an extension of the ban are loud and clear, but the city is finding it difficult to respond due to strict legal requirements.

The political discussion is accompanied by an analysis of the effects of such prohibited zones. According to a study, such measures cannot always completely solve alcohol-related problems. Addiction experts are calling for more comprehensive approaches, such as increasing the price of alcohol or advertising bans, in order to sustainably reduce consumption.

The role of health policy

The Federal Center for Health Education also warns of constitutional concerns regarding the implementation of the prohibition zones in Thuringia. As already noted in 2024, there are certainly legal challenges in introducing such measures, as they encroach on citizens' civil liberties. For many municipalities, this represents a hurdle that needs to be overcome.

The discussion about alcohol ban zones is accompanied by a tension between the desire for public safety and the protection of individual freedoms. In the meantime, it remains to be seen whether the positive experiences from cities like Erfurt and Jena will lead to an expansion of prohibition zones in other municipalities or whether further, more fundamental solutions can be found in alcohol policy.
