Fatal motorcycle accidents in Thuringia: A day full of tragedies!
In a tragic day for motorcyclists, a serious accident occurred in Thuringia on Wednesday. Loud MDR A 71-year-old motorcyclist had a fatal accident near Themar. The man was part of a group of four motorcyclists when he crossed into oncoming traffic between Tachbach and Marisfeld and collided with a car. Despite the immediate assistance provided at the scene of the accident, any assistance came too late; the motorcyclist died at the scene of the accident.
The road had to be temporarily closed to allow the police to investigate the accident. A few hours later there was another incident in Westenfeld, where a driver collided with a moped driver while turning. The 70-year-old moped driver was seriously injured in the accident and had to be taken to the Meiningen Hospital, while the driver was uninjured. The material damage was estimated at around 12,000 euros.
The risks of motorcycling
There are currently around 4.7 million motorcycles registered in Germany, with almost 15 percent of them being driven by women. Particularly worrying is the fact that motorcyclists are four to seven times more likely to have an accident than car or other road users. The proportion of motorcyclists involved in traffic fatalities has decreased since 2000, but the accident rate for this group is still over 500 fatal motorcyclists and almost 10,000 seriously injured motorcyclists every year ADAC accident analysis reported.
The most common causes of accidents are driving errors and excessive speed, which play a role in 47 and 39 percent of solo accidents, respectively. More than half of collisions with other road users occur as a result of turning and intersection accidents, often involving cars. Young motorcyclists between the ages of 15 and 24 are particularly at risk.
Safety measures and recommendations
Although the number of motorcyclists killed has fallen, safety measures are still necessary. Experts recommend wearing protective clothing and carrying out regular safety checks. Driving safety training for motorcyclists is also crucial in order to minimize the risk of accidents. Technical safety features such as cornering ABS and traction control could also help reduce accidents. Infrastructural measures, such as cutting back vegetation and setting up directional signs, contribute to safety on the roads, as an analysis by the Federal Highway Research Institute shows Bast.
In light of these tragic incidents, motorcyclists should always ride defensively and be aware of the physical limitations of their vehicle. As the current figures show, the environment is often dangerous for motorcyclists. Everyone should do their best to increase road safety.
