Caution! Tricksters in Mühlhausen: Fake water meters on the move!

Last week there was a lot of trouble in Mühlhausen and Ebeleben (Kyffhäuserkreis) because several citizens became victims of perfidious tricksters. The perpetrators posed as water meter readers and used this method to infiltrate their victims' homes. So on Wednesday, October 9th, around 12:30 p.m., a woman in Ebeleben rang the doorbell and pretended to have to read the water meter. While she was leading the resident into the bathroom, her accomplice sneaked in and stole a savings book. Only after the two had fled did the injured party notice the theft. Just an hour later, at 1:30 p.m., a similar incident happened in Mühlhausen am Schlotheimer Ring, where cash was stolen while the perpetrator was distracted. The police suspect that these are the same devious tricksters and are urgently warning older people about such schemes. Witnesses are asked to report to the police in Sondershausen or Mühlhausen in order to stop the perpetrators. Details about the suspects: The female perpetrator is described as 25-30 years old, around 1.60 meters tall and slim, with shoulder-length, dark brown curly hair and broken German. Her male accomplice is also in the same age group, around 1.80 meters tall and has short brown hair. Thuringian General reports about it.

But there is news not only in the world of crime. The Albrecht Kiesow Foundation in Mühlhausen was awarded a special prize of 5,000 euros in the “machen!2025” competition. This recognition recognizes the commitment of the foundation, which regularly organizes events to bring people of different ages and backgrounds together. The monthly series of events aims to promote community and counteract loneliness.

Cultural highlights in Mühlhausen

There is also a reason to celebrate for music lovers: On October 14, 2025, the music revue “The Real Comedian Harmonists” will be performed at the Schwanenteich cultural site. Spectators can look forward to live music and nostalgic classics. Also not to be missed is the Mühlhausen Advent calendar, which is available at the Mühlhausen Tourist Information Center and the C. Schlitzer bookstore. This is filled with chocolate and shows a magnificent city view of Mühlhausen.

Also interesting for active people: On October 13, 2025, a cycling get-together will take place at the Brauhaus zum Löwen. Here, enthusiastic cyclists can exchange ideas for joint tours and network with one another. Just three days later, on October 16th, there will be a fat bread hike by the Mühlhausen Forest Association, which starts at 10:10 a.m. at the White House. After an extensive hike, fatty bread and mulled wine await the participants.

Place name explanation

On a completely different level, Professor Jürgen Udolph presented new insights into the origin of the place names Höngeda and Felchta. He explained that Höngeda may mean "place on the hill", while Felchta is probably derived from a description for "place on a flat surface". Such cultural discoveries contribute to the region's identity and are particularly important for history buffs.

Back to the topic of trick thefts: The police authorities warn that such crimes are often in the context of fraud, which fell by 1.5 percent in Germany in 2024. Despite the declining numbers, caution is advised because fraudsters often act professionally and organize their actions to the detriment of older people. The clearance rate for fraud crimes is rather low, and the Federal Criminal Police Office recommends that citizens be suspicious of strangers and, if in doubt, not to allow access Press portal. BKA.
