Forest fire disaster in Thuringia: 300 hectares in flames!

There's a lot going on in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district: A forest fire near Gösselsdorf has had the region firmly under control since Wednesday, July 3, 2025. Loud daily news A disaster has already been declared after the fire spread to around 300 hectares. This is the largest forest fire in Thuringia since 1993 and the emergency services are facing enormous challenges.

The situation is tense: problems with the fire-fighting work are exacerbated by rising winds and inadequate water supplies. The available fire-fighting water resources have already been exhausted, meaning water has to be brought in from around 10 km away. Around 250 emergency services from various organizations such as the fire department, THW, civil protection and police are on duty. According to operations management, it is hoped that the fire will be brought under control by Thursday evening; the emergency services will remain on site at least until Sunday.

Smoke and train cancellations

The heavy smoke development not only affects the immediate area, but also the Sonneberg district and neighboring parts of Bavaria. Residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed to minimize health risks. In addition, train traffic in western and southern Thuringia is severely disrupted. The ICE trains to and from Frankfurt have to contend with delays of around two hours, and some train stations are not served at all.

There was material damage amounting to several thousand euros. Furthermore, federal highway 249 near Mühlhausen was temporarily closed due to a small fire; extinguishing work took around 45 minutes.

Forest fire danger and historical perspective

The risk of forest fires in Thuringia is alarmingly high, and the Heldburg Forestry Office reports the highest danger level is 5. There have already been 24 forest fires in the region this year, although the main season usually only begins in August. The soil is drier than ever and the forests urgently need water. This is not only done by the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food recognized that has been collecting wildfire data since the 1970s, but it is also part of a larger strategy to reduce the number and area size of wildfires in the future.

The forest fulfills numerous functions, be it as a useful, protective or recreational space. In Germany, the protection and preservation of these valuable resources is of utmost importance, especially given the high population density.
