Bach Biennale 2025: Weimar in festival fever for musica pura!

The anticipation for this year's Bach Biennale in Weimar couldn't be greater! From Tuesday, July 11th, the city that once influenced Johann Sebastian Bach will once again become a meeting place for music lovers from all over the world. Led by festival director Myriam Eichberger, there are numerous events on the program that celebrate the legacy and music of this great composer. A special highlight this year is the new masterclass with the exciting title “Music Mosaic”, which focuses on the early works of Bach. Within the historic walls of Weimar, not only is music played, but also a link to literature, dance and theater, which ensures a comprehensive cultural experience.

The Bach Biennale takes place until July 23rd and promises a diverse range of events. This year the focus is on presenting Weimar as a true Bach city. Bach lived here from 1708 to 1717 and worked as a “concert master” and “chamber musician” in the ballroom of the city palace. The original cellar vaults and foundation walls of his home have also been preserved in the old town, giving the event additional authenticity. Visitors have the opportunity to take part in charity concerts in the open air, which are intended to raise money for a future Bach House in Weimar.

A rich program awaits the guests

Program highlights include some exciting concerts and masterclasses that will take place in the coming days:

  • 11. Juli, 19:30 Uhr: J.S. Bach “Musikalisches Opfer” in der Stadtkirche St. Peter und Paul, сыграно von Lina Tur Bonet.
  • 12. Juli, 19 Uhr: Barockfest im Schießhaus Weimar.
  • 15. bis 23. Juli: Masterclass “Music Mosaic” im Schießhaus Weimar, mit dem Abschlusskonzert im September in Venedig.

The program ranges from solo singing and chamber music to dance and theater and is structured in a modular manner so that participants can decide individually which courses they would like to take part in. The aim is to creatively integrate various disciplines in order to offer participants essential foundations for musical practice. All of this happens in places that resonate with the topic and promote a rich learning experience.

Cultural highlights and innovative formats

The Bach Biennale not only offers the opportunity to experience music at a high level. The event has also developed into a platform that offers numerous innovative formats. Particularly eye-catching offers include “Music in Bach's Arrest Cell”, weekly lunch concerts in the Hotel Elephant Weimar, and even hiking and cycling concerts that bring the sound of old music to life in authentic places. Since 2012, the KIBA Children's Bach Biennale has been available for younger guests, a creative music craft workshop that ensures that even the youngest get to know Bach's music in a varied way.

The Bach Biennale not only arouses the interest of Weimar residents, but also attracts many guests who do not want to miss the unique sound experiences in this historic city. Bach's music is performed here on instruments of his time, which underlines the authenticity of the experience - one more reason to mark your calendar until July 23rd!
