Bouldering dreams come true: new climbing hall opens in Weimar!
A new attraction opens today in Weimar. The German Alpine Club Weimar inaugurated a new bouldering area in the climbing hall on Kromsdorfer Straße on September 30, 2025. The expansion, which began at the end of October last year, covers a generous area of 30 by 22 meters and enormously enriches the existing climbing offerings in the region.
The hall, which is the largest DAV club center in Thuringia, offers numerous opportunities for both newcomers and experienced climbers on an indoor climbing area of a total of 800 m² and an outdoor area of 350 m². With over 100 routes of varying difficulty levels and a special competition area, there is something for everyone to discover. What is particularly noteworthy is that the previous bouldering area was converted to create a child and family-friendly area. After today's ceremony, the new facilities will be available to all visitors at the beginning of October.
Financing and design
The extension was estimated to cost a total of 1.3 million euros, which was raised by the Alpine Club, the Sparkasse, the State Sports Association as well as funding from the state and the city. Such investments are not only important for the climbing hall, but also reflect the constant increase in interest in climbing. According to that German Alpine Club The number of climbers in Germany has risen sharply in the last 30 years from around 70,000 in 1990 to over a million in 2023.
The “EnergieWände” climbing hall not only meets the need for climbing opportunities, but also includes a bistro where hungry climbers can be provided with snacks, drinks and even pizza, as well as a material rental facility and a shop with high-quality sport climbing equipment from renowned manufacturers.
Additional events in Weimar
But the new bouldering area is not the only news in Weimar. The University of Music is also hosting a symposium until Thursday where career opportunities for young talents in the areas of music, cultural management and sport will be discussed. The event connects experts from many areas and follows last year's “Top-Sport-Music” meeting.
Meanwhile, the Weimar Green League's mobile cider factory is enjoying great popularity in its 17th season, having already processed over 70 tons of fruit into juice. A total of ten tonnes were pressed last year, and the league expects this to increase to around 100 tonnes thanks to an excellent harvest. Unfortunately, all dates until the end of October are already fully booked.
In addition, the Staatskapelle Weimar began its new concert season in the Weimarhalle under guest conductor Alexander Liebreich. Works by composers such as Pavel Haas and Beethoven were on the program, while the season's motto is “Glowing Desire” and includes a total of nine symphony concerts.
The day is rounded off by the appeal hearing of the former SPD economics minister Matthias Machnig. Nine years after its ruling, the Thuringian Higher Administrative Court is today beginning the procedural steps to resolve a repayment dispute over 150,000 euros.
All in all, there is a lot to celebrate and experience in Weimar - not least due to the exciting opening of the new bouldering area, which will further revitalize climbing in the region.
