Caught twice: 30-year-old steals electronic items in Weimar!
An embarrassing incident occurred in a busy electronics market in Weimar on Wednesday morning: a 30-year-old man was caught trying to steal PS controllers worth 160 euros. As Bild reports, an attentive employee spoke to him behind the checkout area, which prompted the thief to immediately return the controllers. But this was not to be the end of his criminal activities.
In the afternoon, the same man was caught stealing again, this time in Kaufland. Here he wanted to steal electronic items with the same value of 160 euros. During a search of his backpack, the officers discovered three Bluetooth boxes that were presumably stolen that morning. These were confiscated to be returned to the rightful owner. The man is now facing two charges of theft and must also expect to be banned from both stores, as the press portal reports.
A trend towards more shoplifting
The incident reflects a worrying trend. In recent years the number of shopliftings has increased dramatically. According to a survey, the number of reported cases rose by 23.6 percent to a total of 426,096 thefts last year, which is a record high. More serious shoplifting also includes thefts from locked containers or with goods secured, with the figure being 27,452 reported cases.
The reasons for this increase are complex. It is estimated that there are around 24 million undetected shoplifting cases every year, with each theft having an average value of 117 euros. This corresponds to around 100,000 shopliftings on every sales day in Germany, according to the EHI. Retail, drugstores and the clothing sector are particularly affected. While hardware stores were able to keep their theft levels stable, other industries are increasingly suffering from inventory differences.
These incidents bring the issue of security within stores into greater focus. Stores are required to take appropriate measures to protect both their products and their customers. Given the numerous undetected thefts, it will be exciting to see how the situation develops in the coming months.
