Goethe 250 years in Weimar: cultural heritage for the next generation!
On November 7, 1775, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe set off for Weimar, an encounter that would leave its mark on the city forever. Today, 250 years later, the figure of the great poet and thinker is still a central theme in Weimar. Right now, in the year dedicated to Goethe's masterpiece “Faust”, Goethe's traces are becoming visible in the city, and tourists are offered a wide range of offers based on his name.
Weimar GmbH has worked intensively to offer visitors an authentic experience. Ulrike Köppel, the managing director, emphasizes that guests want to take part in Goethe's legacy. In the numerous souvenir shops you can find a variety of Ginkgo products and Goethe merchandise, from practical salt shakers to original lamps such as the Lumi-Goethe. Special emphasis is placed on quality and sustainability: “We don’t offer any junk items,” says Köppel.
Goethe's legacy and the Classical Foundation
The Klassik Stiftung Weimar, which manages Goethe's legacy, specializes in educational and cultural projects. Ulrike Lorenz, President of the Foundation, aims to convey Goethe's intellectual achievements in a contemporary manner. One of the current attractions is the exhibition on Goethe's “Faust” in the Schiller Museum, which is recording brilliant visitor numbers. The young audience in particular is addressed through interactive stations and appealing tours from reading age onwards. The short tours take place every Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and are suitable for all age groups.
The ticket prices are fair: adults aged 16 and over pay 8 euros, while children between 7 and 15 years only pay 5 euros. A combination ticket for visiting the Schiller Museum and Schiller's home is also available. Visiting the exhibition lasts between 45 minutes and 2 hours and is open on public holidays, apart from New Year's Eve, when the doors close at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased both on site and in the online ticket shop.
A look into the future
The themed year on Goethe and “Faust” is coming to an end, but there will be another focus on Goethe in 2026. The poet's historic home is also about to be renovated, demonstrating efforts to keep Goethe's legacy attractive to new generations. New souvenirs, such as “Des Pudels Kern” soap and embroidered caps, are added and enrich the Goethe cosmos.
The exhibition “Goethe’s Faust: News for the 21st Century” is a further step towards interpreting and questioning Goethe’s work for today. The opportunity to experience the diverse offerings, from guided tours to the treasures of the Faust collection, shows how alive Goethe's legacy is in Weimar.
With a public bus that proudly bears the name J. W. Goethe and the goal of keeping the poet and his works highly popular, Weimar shows that the passion for Goethe should continue in the future - true to the motto: "There's something there!"
