Leipzig publisher Spector Books triumphs in the Most Beautiful German Books!

On Monday evening, June 16, 2025, the winners of the “Most Beautiful German Books” award were announced in Berlin. This event traditionally honors the most outstanding works of book design and offers a fascinating insight into the creative diversity of German book production. The Leipzig publisher Spector Books triumphed in this competition by winning four titles, making it the most successful publisher of the year. MDR reports that the award-winning books shine thematically and creatively and perfectly capture the intersection between art, theory and design.

The award-winning works include a five-part series of essays by Alexander Kluge entitled “The Subjunctive of Images” which addresses the influence of artificial intelligence in film art. Another outstanding book is “Raising the Curtain” by Oxana Gourinovitch, which deals with the origin stories of two modernist opera houses in Vilnius and Minsk. A total of 25 exemplary books were honored in five categories, with the focus being on the design quality rather than the content.

A jury with a good hand

The books were selected by an expert jury consisting of experts such as Chrish Knigge, who emphasizes that a beautiful book is more than just material, font and color. Criteria for the award are exemplary design, conception and workmanship. The jury membership shows the diversity of creative possibilities and important trends that shape the German book market. Stiftung Buchkunst emphasizes that the event, which has been taking place since 1929, continues to provide new impetus for book production and makes current trends visible.

The award-winning titles are not only celebrated in Germany, but also presented at book fairs at home and abroad as well as in exhibitions in libraries and bookstores. A creative highlight will be the permanent exhibition in the foyer of the Literaturhaus Frankfurt, where readers can experience the most beautiful books up close.

Promoting young talents

Particularly noteworthy is the sponsorship award for young book design, which every year honors courageous and forward-looking projects that conceptually further develop the book medium. In 2025, more than 160 entries were registered, and the three winning projects will each receive 2,000 euros. These will be exhibited from July 17th to August 16th, 2025 at the einBuch.haus in Berlin, which underlines the appreciation for innovative book designs. Designer in Action explains that the selection of the “Most Beautiful German Books” always reveals interesting trends and currents in the book market and keeps the industry moving.

The “Book Art Foundation Prize” will continue to be awarded with prize money of 10,000 euros. The ceremonial announcement of the prize winner will take place on September 5, 2025 at the Museum of Applied Arts in Frankfurt. The selection is made by a special jury, which chooses the best title from the 25 most beautiful German books.

Overall, this year's award impressively shows how diverse and creative the German book landscape is and how important it is to recognize and promote this diversity.
