Open-Air concert in Weimar: Yiddish Summer celebrates 25 years of diversity!

Weimar, Deutschland - On July 12, 2025, the Yiddish Summer Weimar (YSW) starts the upcoming festival season with a lively open-air concert. The Yam Ensemble, consisting of around 30 talented young musicians from Turkey, Greece and Germany, will open the event with a captivating performance of Yiddish, Greek and Sephardic music. This colorful mix of artistic influences promises a unique music enjoyment that will captivate the audience. The ensemble, a project of the YSW, already shows how sounds and cultures can come together harmoniously - not least because songs are put together in different languages into a common melody.

A large part of the repertoire of the Yam Ensemble comes from the Klezmermusik, which has its origin in the Jewish Tradition. Originally rooted in Eastern Europe, klezmer music has also blossomed in North America and Europe in recent decades. As yiddish- culture.com , this music form has been popular under non-Jews by the end of the 1970s and is still very popular today.

cultural diversity and promotion of young talents

The first edition of the Yam Ensemble took place in the summer of 2024 and thus laid the foundation for the following projects. This initiative is funded by the Erasmus+program and wants to bring young musicians together between the ages of 18 and 30 from the participating countries. The application phase has been completed, but interested parties can continue to contact the project manager Nataliia in order to discuss possible opportunities for participation.

In 2025, the YAM project will take place in three countries: First, the participants travel to the Technical University in Istanbul for rehearsals before continuing to Agios Lavrentios in Greece. The crowning glory of this unique project will be the participation in the YSW Festival in Weimar, where it is around 9/10. July will come to a climax of the musical exchange.

a festival for all senses

Not only the Yam Ensemble is the focus. The YSW offers more than 100 public concerts and events as well as free taster courses for Yiddish language and music by August 17th. The cultural workers thus make a valuable contribution to the preservation and promotion of the Jewish heritage and its musical traditions. Guests from all over the world can look forward to a wide range of music that ranges from Klezmer to Yiddish melodies to modern interpretations. According to n-tv.de, the open-air concert will also take place at light rain. Visitors can look forward to an atmospheric event.

This 25-year anniversary edition of Yiddish Summer Weimar is a new chapter that not only recognizes the past, but also offers the musicians and listeners the opportunity to grow together and to take new musical routes. The klezmer music, which was once created to accompany dances, has developed into a lively genre and experiences a renaissance through events such as the YSW that brings together across generations.
