Weimar's Schwanseebad closes with a decline in visitors: pure summer frustration!
The summer of 2025 in Thuringia will fall short of expectations. Despite a few hot days over 30 degrees, the results of the outdoor pools and snack bar operators were anything but positive. This unpleasant weather situation also meant that the Weimar Schwanseebad heralded the end of the season on September 14, 2025. Thüringen24 reports that the outdoor pool only welcomed 80,000 visitors this season - a decline of around 20 percent compared to the previous year.
July 2025 was characterized by rain and cold instead of sunshine. The meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) had reported 15 to 20 days of rain for July, which made the situation considerably more difficult for the outdoor swimming pools. Die Zeit explains that the Erfurt Nordbad recorded around 59,000 visitors by the beginning of August, which corresponds to a decrease of around 1,800 bathers compared to the previous year. The situation was similar at the Erfurt lido, where only around 35,000 bathers had been able to come so far, also a decrease of around 1,000 compared to the previous year.
Weather-related challenges
While some outdoor pools such as the Waldbad Ruhla closed their doors due to the weather, others had shortened opening times. In the Ilmenau outdoor pool, only a few people dared to go into the water, as even signs to change clothes were often ineffective. The region is now hoping all the more for the return of summer, because the weather forecasts give hope for improvement: from this Thursday the temperature is expected to rise to 25 to 28 degrees, with a clear change to sunnier weather In southern Thuringia .
The managing director of the Schwanseebad, Bernd Wagner, commented on the closure date and called for more warm bathing days for the coming season. “We hope that the summer of 2026 will be kind to us and that we can welcome more guests again,” says Wagner. However, the response to the events held in the outdoor pool was consistently positive.
A look forward
Overall, the operators of Thuringia's outdoor pools expect the number of visitors to be 20 to 25 percent fewer than in the last three to four years. The past hot days are positive, but they will not be enough to significantly improve the poor balance of the summer of 2025. However, the anticipation for the 2026 season remains unbroken: it is up to us to be optimistic about the coming year and hope for better weather.
