The tours begin in the foyer of the Historical Museum of the Paderborn Hochstift. Registration is advisable because the number of participants is limited. Places can be conveniently reserved online at wewelsburg.de. The great? Visiting the exhibition and the supporting program are free of charge!

The Wewelsburg itself is not only the scene of this historical exhibition, but also an architectural highlight. Built between 1603 and 1609 by Prince -Bishop Dietrich von Fürstenberg, the castle is in the impressive style of the Weser Renaissance and is unique in its triangle shape. High up on a mountain spur it is majestically above the Almetal.

A look at the story

The district museum of Wewelsburg not only houses the current anniversary exhibition, but also the impressive permanent exhibitions that address the history of the Paderborner Land from the Stone Age until 1802. Visitors can admire rare exhibits here that give insights into the life of the clergy at that time, the nobility and the population - including the social outsiders. A highlight is the historic witch cellar and the original condition of the old Hellweg from the 13th century.

The memorial and memorial that deals with the dark side of the Wewelsburg is particularly depressing. Here it is discussed how this castle was to become the planned central meeting place of SS Germany. At least 1,285 prisoners lost their lives in the associated concentration camp due to the miserable living and working conditions. The permanent exhibition "ideology and terror of the SS" therefore offers an honest view of these terrible crimes.

The Wewelsburg remains accessible, with a few exceptions, and also offers special guided tours for people with disabilities or dementia, of course by arrangement.

This anniversary exhibition is an excellent opportunity to learn more about an exciting, often overlooked era and to discover the cultural treasures of the region. Have a look and let yourself be enchanted by the story and the stories that the Wewelsburg has to tell!
