Over 2,500 households in Thuringia: mobile phone coverage a nightmare!
In Thuringia it is currently about more than just the beauty of the landscape: there is discussion about an expensive lack of mobile phone coverage. According to a report by star There are still 2,539 private households here without access to mobile broadband. This significant number of unserved households highlights a growing problem that is exacerbating the digital divide in Germany.
But why is that? A study by the Federal Digital Ministry shows that there are around 532 square kilometers in Thuringia with so-called “white spots” – areas without any internet reception. This situation puts Thuringia at the top of the unserviced areas and households without fast mobile communications in East Germany. If you look at the entire German market, 99.9 percent of the 41.4 million households have mobile Internet access. A striking north-south divide cannot be overlooked: the southern federal states are increasingly struggling with larger, untended areas.
The effects of digital undersupply
Mountainous regions, forest and nature reserves as well as border regions are particularly affected. These “white spots” hinder economic development and the use of digital services. This makes services such as mobile payments or the networking of devices significantly more difficult. Nationwide, more than 28,000 households are affected by the undersupply, with most living in Baden-Württemberg (8,022) and Bavaria (7,235).
The data shows that at the beginning of 2025 there were around 23,500 white spots in an area of 7,518 square kilometers in Germany. What is remarkable is that 95 percent of these white spots are smaller than one square kilometer. This not only has an impact on the quality of life of those affected, but also on economic development in the region.
