Quaking aspen: Thuringia's rare tree of the year 2026 discovered!

On November 11, 2025, the quaking aspen (Populus tremula) was named the tree of the year for 2026. This was announced by the “Tree of the Year – Dr. Silvius Wodarz Foundation” on November 5, 2025. This award aims to raise awareness of the importance of native tree species and draws attention to the rarity of the quaking aspen in Thuringia, where its share of the tree species is less than one percent. What is particularly striking is that the widespread spruce in this state stands in stark contrast to the quaking aspen, which is found primarily in forest-free areas and in special locations such as riparian forests and along rivers.

The quaking aspen is not only a beautiful tree species, but also extremely ecologically valuable. Their strong root system and ability to adapt to adverse conditions such as water- and nutrient-poor soils make them a true pioneer species. It also plays a significant role in climate change as it colonizes open spaces and contributes to forest regeneration. Its leaves “shake” gently with the slightest breeze, which is why it also has a special visual appeal, and over 60 species of butterflies, including the greater iridescent butterfly, find it an important habitat.

A tree with a story

The foundation has awarded the title “Tree of the Year” every year since 1989. The quaking aspen has now been included in the circle of the worthy as a sign of recognition of its ecological achievements. The Dr. The Silvius Wodarz Foundation is committed to the promotion and protection of these tree species and calls for the aspen to be integrated into both the landscape and the forests. As part of research projects run by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Community, such as the TreeHarm project, research is currently being carried out into methods to better protect trees against pests.

The foundation's advisory board consists of 32 environmental institutions and associations that work together to protect the local flora. In addition, Parliamentary State Secretary Silvia Breher has taken over the patronage of the Tree of the Year 2026. This gives the quaking aspen an additional appreciation and importance in public spaces.

Activities around the quaking aspen

The foundation initiates numerous campaigns nationwide, including tree planting, to raise awareness of the quaking aspen among the population. Levke Riedel was elected Tree Queen of the Aspen, which underlines the importance and charm of this special tree species. It's a nice opportunity to get more involved with our nature and to get a good idea of how we can protect and promote native species.

The quaking aspen - a tree that impresses not only with its external features, but also with its tireless way of life and the challenges it faces. A reason to learn more about our local flora and take a look into the forest!

We should take care of this valuable tree species and honor it in our gardens and parks so that we can continue to enjoy its beauty and ecological benefits in the future.
