Fatal clinic fire in Hamburg: Patient puts pillows in flames!
Hamburg, Deutschland - Today there was a tragic incident in the Hamburg Marienkrankenhaus when a 72-year-old patient set a pillow. The fire led to four deaths and at least 34 injuries, reported rosenheim24 . Among the fatalities are three patients aged 84, 85 and 87 as well as a 72-year-old woman whose exact cause of death has not yet been clarified.
The public prosecutor has arrested the suspect due to incapacity to guilt or reduced guilt. A judge ordered his preliminary accommodation in a psychiatric clinic because he is suspected of murder by arson with death. The investigation into the incident is still at the beginning. Witnesses led the investigators to the 72-year-old man, and it is feared that the number of injuries could increase, since some may show symptoms later. The fire broke out on the ground floor of the geriatric station, one of the largest clinics in Hamburg with around 600 beds and around 93,000 patients treated annually.
Advanced investigation after further incidents
Another shocking incident in Germany affects a doctor who is suspected of murder. Ermittlungen bestätigen, dass der Verdächtige kein Motiv außer „Mordlust“ hatte, wie inFranken berichtet. The 40-year-old is accused of having killed patients in his care at a nursing service.
The investigation has concentrated in several cases in which the suspect is accused of killing patients with a fatal drug mixture or during fires. In one case, he is said to have killed a 70-year-old in Berlin-Tempelhof on June 24, 2022 to cover up his actions. The police have set up special investigative groups and also examines possible further acts.
fire risk in care facilities further high
In the current fire statistics of the BVFA - the Federal Association of Technical Brand Protection e.V. - the number of fire victims in hospitals and nursing homes in Germany will also remain worryingly high in 2024. 114 fires were registered in hospitals with seven deaths and 148 injuries. In nursing and retirement homes there were 162 fires in which 27 people were killed and 355 were injured. According to Feuertrutz , about half of the cause of the fire were often the most common or negligent arson Cause.
The security situation remains challenging, especially in German care facilities where sprinkler systems are rare. In contrast to Great Britain or the USA, where such systems are widespread, only a few institutions are equipped accordingly in Germany. Dr. Wolfram Krause, Managing Director of the BVFA, warns of a continued high fire risk in these facilities.
