Breakthrough in investigation: Firefighter as suspect in car fires in Halle!
In Halle, particular attention is currently being paid to a series of car fires in recent months. The Heide-Nord district, which is already perceived as unsafe by residents, is the focus of these investigations. The police have now made significant progress in the investigation: a DNA trace that could be assigned to a 19-year-old firefighter from Latvia was found in a Ford Focus that had been set on fire. Reported on this Dubist Hall, that the affected car finally burst into flames within just two hours of an initial unsuccessful fire attempt in which a lit match was thrown into it.
The police have been investigating since the beginning of the year and have since become aware of a total of 17 car fires in Halle, with the majority taking place in Heide-Nord. The series of fires also began on Friday last week with two vehicles burning in the morning, followed by another fire in the Lettin district, where an accelerant was used. This information comes from a report by MDR, indicating that investigators are also considering that all incidents could potentially be related.
Concerned residents
The residents in Heide-Nord are under pressure. Sleep disturbances and fears about safety are commonplace among residents, and some families have even had their older vehicles fully insured to protect themselves against possible future damage. Police spokesman Thomas Müller, who is responsible for the investigation, notes that the perpetrators appear to be following a certain pattern. Small cars in which the window pane is damaged in order to ignite an incendiary device are usually affected. After the crime, the perpetrators usually leave the crime scene, but without expecting to be observed. MDR reports that the political background of the crimes has been ruled out, as far as further speculation about the motives is concerned.
The police are under pressure in this series of fires and are having initial success in identifying a suspect. While the firefighter has already been suspended from the Latvian Volunteer Fire Department, there are still no tangible leads regarding other fire locations and victims. The investigation is ongoing and prosecutors have not yet confirmed whether charges will be filed. Uncertainty remains, but investigators are optimistic that they are getting closer to the perpetrator.
A look at Berlin shows that arson of vehicles is also a significant problem there: In 2024, around 750 cars were set on fire in the capital, the majority of which were non-politically motivated, as in a report by RBB is noted. These figures make it clear that arson is not only a local problem, but also a social phenomenon.
The situation in Halle could get even worse, and solving the series of fires is a top priority for the police and concerned citizens. The residents hope that the incidents will be resolved quickly and that they will soon be able to sleep peacefully again.
