Hesse in focus: Four universities on the path to excellence!

Today there is exciting news from Hesse: For the first time, four Hessian universities are applying for the coveted title of “University of Excellence”. This initiative is part of the excellence strategy of the federal and state governments, which has been running since 2016 and aims to strengthen Germany as a science location in international competition. The four universities that are now taking part in the competition are the Technical University of Darmstadt, the Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main, the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and the Justus Liebig University of Giessen, and the Philipps University of Marburg is also participating in a network with Giessen.

The application for the second funding line, the “Universities of Excellence”, must be submitted by tomorrow. This title is not only a mark of scientific quality, but also a financial blessing: universities of excellence receive up to 15 million euros annually, while associations can even receive up to 28 million euros. These additional funds are no coincidence - they are intended to help expand the universities' leading international position in research. Science Minister Timon Gremmel praised Hesse's return to the map of research excellence and emphasized the importance of this initiative for the Hessian research landscape.

Strong together

The applying universities rely on cooperation: The Rhine-Main universities (Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Mainz) and the Central Hesse Alliance (Gießen, Marburg) have already had successful research partnerships for a long time. The research alliance in Central Hesse deals with pioneering topics such as “mind, brain and behavior” as well as innovative approaches in the areas of heart, lungs, materials science and microorganisms. This close collaboration is a decisive advantage in the competition for the title of University of Excellence.

The Excellence Strategy itself builds on the previous Excellence Initiative and has promoted outstanding research achievements in the past. Eleven universities and associations of excellence are taking part in the current funding period, including already approved clusters such as the “Cardio-Pulmonary Institute” and “Microbes-for-Climate”. These structures enable intensive networking and set innovative standards in the German university landscape. There are also new developments and adjustments to further increase international competitiveness in the higher education sector.

The path to excellence

The next steps are crucial: The funding decisions for the applications will be made in October 2026, but the applications must meet certain requirements, such as the successful acquisition of clusters of excellence. Thanks to successes in the first funding line, a total of four Hessian universities qualify for this competition, which is of great importance for higher education. This not only creates visibility, but also sharpens research profiles and promotes networking within the system.

The Excellence Strategy provides a budget of a total of 539 million euros annually for clusters of excellence and a further 687 million euros per year with funding from the federal and state governments. The words of Science Minister Timon Gremmel are more than just smoke and mirrors - they point to an exciting, promising path that Hesse's universities are now taking. It remains to be seen what success stories will emerge from this initiative.
