Pharmacy in Gützkow: Courageous investment despite the crisis!

Gützkow, Deutschland - Pharmacies are under pressure in Germany. With increasing costs, a complicated bureaucracy and a growing shortage of skilled workers, you have to deal with numerous challenges. A worrying trend shows that the number of pharmacies has been falling for years. In 2022, 530 pharmacies closed, and according to the Federal Association of German Pharmacists' Associations (ABDA), every fourth pharmacy is now acute if there are no reforms in sight. At the end of 2023, only 17,571 pharmacies were active in Germany, which is a new low. The problem is still reinforced by delivery bottlenecks for various medication and the trend towards online trading. This questions the security of the population and makes the profession less attractive to new specialists. In addition, the remuneration of pharmacies for prescription drugs, which has only increased by 10 percent in the past ten years, is far after the increased material and personnel costs.

In the middle of this difficult starting point, Iris Görs, owner of two pharmacies in Gützkow and Züssow, decided to invest against the trend. She plans to build a new pharmacy with an investment volume of around three million euros. This new facility will include a sales room of 130 square meters and modern work and lounge. An innovative picking machine will replace the manual assembly of the medication cabinet and digitally manage the goods. An output machine is also installed to enable customers to collect their medication regardless of opening hours. In addition, Görs has joined the MEA cooperative pharmacy cooperation to better enable e-recipes and pre-orders.

action for the attention exploitation

Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach is planning to redistribute the funds in the pharmacy market. According to his suggestions, pharmaceutical-technical assistants could ensure that the care could be used in the future, while pharmacists could switch on video. However, the ABDA warns of possible loss of quality in the supply of drugs and refers to an expert opinion by Professor Dr. Udo di Fabio, which emphasizes the state's obligation to protect in terms of pharmaceutical care with regard to the fundamental right to life and physical integrity.

shortage of skilled workers as a central challenge

A central aspect of the pharmacy crisis is the shortage of skilled workers. The number of pharmacists rises, but many migrate to industry or hospitals. It is all the more important that pharmacists receive appropriate salaries that are considered a decisive incentive. A current survey has shown that 68 percent of those willing to change in nursing consider payment as the most important criterion for long -term activity. In the pharmacy, too, salary incentives seem to be an essential factor to win future employees. Better working hours and improved personnel equipment provide further impulses to make the profession more sustainable.

In view of these challenges, it remains to be seen whether Iris Görs and their vision of a modern new pharmacy can cause the turn in everyday pharmacies. The investment in new technologies and modern concepts could be groundbreaking, not only for your pharmacies, but also for the entire industry in Germany.
