A look into history
The Museum Island, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, is considered a fascinating ensemble of architecture, art and history. The Museum Island was founded in 1825 and attracts around 2.5 million visitors every year. Governing Mayor Kai Wegner has taken over the patronage of the celebrations, which will extend over five years. Berlin has thus decided to give this central cultural site the recognition it deserves.
Large special exhibitions are also planned for the anniversary. The highlights include the exhibition "Grundstein Antike. Berlin's first museum", which deals with the Altes Museum and its collection of antiquities, as well as "Myths in Stone", which focuses on the UNESCO World Heritage site of Göbekli Tepe in Turkey. The exhibition “Goya – Monet – Degas – Bonnard – Grosse” will also present the most important German private collection of French art. These events are just a part of the extensive program, which offers much more, including open-air exhibitions, concerts and film nights in the open-air cinema.
