Berlin in summer: lots of hotels free - waiting holiday bargains!
In the exciting metropolis of Berlin, tourism has taken some interesting twists in the past few months. Young travelers who explore the German capital in particular can be seen frequently this season. Despite the high number of visitors, many hotels are still not fully utilized. The average daily rate for a hotel room has changed significantly compared to previous years. According to Top Hotel in June 2023, which is a decline compared to 2022 with 157.03 euros.
Gerrit Buchhorn, General Manager of Dehoga Berlin, emphasizes that the tourism industry has a slight improvement in occupancy. In June 2023, the Berlin hotels were able to achieve an occupancy rate of 81.4 percent, but this is still below the 2019 level, the last summer before pandemic. In particular, the European Football Championship 2024 has proven to be a double-edged sword: high crowds, but also rising prices that deterred potential tourists, as Buchhorn explains. An attractive travel destination for young people
The situation in July 2023 seems to be more promising, because according to the Visit Berlin tourism association, the bookings are already good, but the hotels are not yet fully booked. The increase in international guests, especially Italy, Spain and France, creates a lively mood on the streets of Berlin. Statistics Berlin-Brandenburg reports that from January to May 2025, around 4.8 million guests visited the city, which corresponds to 11.3 million overnight stays. Despite a decline of 2 percent among guests compared to the previous year, interest in Berlin remains unbroken.
The trend among the arrives is also interesting: more than half of the passing guests, namely 56 percent, are younger than 35 years. This young generation of travelers is flexible, likes to book on platforms such as Airbnb or in hostels and often searches for unconventional experiences away from the classic tourist paths. It brings a breath of fresh air to city life!
challenges for the hotel industry
Despite the rain number of visitors, the hotel industry remains with challenges. The premises in Berlin offer a total of 146,406 beds, and the utilization from January to May only was 51.1 percent. These numbers, combined with the diverse range of accommodation options, suggest that good business is due for guests, while the hotels have to be more creative in their offers.
In the future, it will be exciting to what extent the booking situation after the European Football Championship will develop in 2024. At the moment, Berlin seems to offer a great price-performance ratio in an international comparison, which is another incentive for travelers to visit the city.
