Berlin facing university crisis: Up to 25,000 study places at risk!
Something is brewing in Berlin: The Senate is planning drastic budget cuts of up to 15 percent for universities. This could lead to a deficit of a whopping 140 million euros in the university budget, reports ZDF Today. Joachim Müller, President of the University Rectors' Conference, is already expressing concern about the far-reaching consequences of these savings, which could, among other things, result in the closure of study programs. The call for mobilization comes from the ranks of students: Luca Schenk is planning a rally against the cuts on July 14th.
The reactions from science are clear: Geraldine Rauch, President of the Technical University of Berlin, warns of massive cuts. “We urgently need financial resources for the renovation of buildings,” she says. These houses are often unusable, which makes the situation anything but easier. To make matters worse, academic staff are also worried about their positions. According to estimates, up to 25,000 study places at state universities could be lost, making the already overcrowded lecture halls even more crowded.
Challenges for the university location
Science Senator Ina Czyborra (SPD) recognizes the difficulties arising from the planned cuts. She has already announced discussions to determine the need for teacher training students. “With less money, less can be expected,” says Czyborra. The red-black government has also planned savings totaling 250 million euros in the science budget for next year, the reported rbb24.
Criticism also comes from Berlin's economy: the savings could endanger the university location. In addition, important projects such as the “Berlin Quantum Alliance” are in jeopardy, as around six million euros in funding will be lost next year. CDU MP Adrian Grasse makes it clear how valuable this research is for Berlin.
Focus on financing universities
The current developments also shed light on the entire system of university financing in Germany. Since the 1970s, the higher education system has been considered underfunded, as am Education server can be read. Forecasts show that student numbers will remain high until 2025, while the financial challenges for universities are constantly increasing. It is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the childcare ratio without appropriately adjusting financing.
A remedial concept, Activating University Financing (AktiHF), is being proposed as a solution. However, it becomes clear that serious decisions must be made in order to adapt the existing contracts with the universities and cover necessary expenses. The Berlin Science Senator intends to renegotiate, but time is short and the pressure is high.
The coming weeks are likely to be decisive: whether and how the situation at universities in Berlin calms down remains to be seen.
