Roof structure fire in Schöneberg: Dramatic rescue after a flaming inferno!
On Wednesday, July 3, 2025, there was a devastating fire in an apartment building in Berlin-Schöneberg. Towards the afternoon, the fire broke out in the roof structure of the building on the corner of Hauptstrasse and Kärntner Strasse and quickly spread to an area of around 400 square meters. The Berlin fire brigade was on site with a large contingent of 167 emergency services rbb24 reported.
The extinguishing work proved to be extremely challenging. Due to the extreme outside temperatures, which were close to 40 degrees, the fire department often had to replace teams. A total of 130 firefighters fought the flames, with several turntable ladders and 16 fire engines being used. The operations management was also strongly supported by a special vehicle for measuring air quality and a drone. Some residents were able to escape outside using freshly erected scaffolding, while others were evacuated by emergency services, according to the update from Daily Mirror.
Evacuation and restrictions
The fire brigade had the fire largely under control by around 6:45 p.m., but numerous checks and extinguishing work were necessary. The stairwell of the house was classified as having restricted use and the district office declared the building uninhabitable. Two building entrances have to be relocated, which leads to an unpleasant exceptional situation for some residents.
A resident had to be taken to hospital with suspected smoke intoxication. Fortunately, no other people were injured, but there was great excitement. A resident, Viktoria T., described that she was on the way home with her son when she noticed the fire. “We had to use the scaffolding that had only recently been erected,” she says. The smoke was visible from afar as firefighters tried to bring the fire under control.
Consequences of use
The massive firefighting work also caused significant water damage. Parts of the attic and the apartment below were in danger of collapsing. In order to help those affected, a care center was set up by the German Red Cross. Traffic on the S-Bahn between Schöneberg and Bundesplatz had to be temporarily stopped, and the main road in the direction of Kleistpark was completely closed. A daycare center in the cordoned off area was also evacuated as a precaution.
The cause of the fire remains unclear for the time being and is being investigated by the police. As a rule, roof truss fires are often the result of unfortunately common causes such as negligent handling of fire, inadequate safety precautions or technical defects. statistics show that fire protection and prevention measures are increasingly becoming a focus in order to prevent such incidents in the future.
