Emergency services clear A2: 24,000 liters of food oil after truck accident!

A serious accident on the A2 motorway blocked the road between theeßen and Ziesar towards Berlin on Saturday morning. A tank claster, which was loaded with around 24,000 liters of food oil, tipped over and caused a large chaos on the street. The 39-year-old driver suffered a minor injury in the incident after he apparently lost consciousness due to health problems and came off the road, grazed the middle protection plank and crashed into a pillar. The truck overturned and then blocked two lanes, while the expired oil was further distributed by cars passing by. According to MDR are affected.

The motorway police in Michendorf urgently asked all drivers to avoid the affected area far, since diversion routes are insufficiently signposted and were heavily overloaded. Work to clean the roadway continues and is expected to continue until Thursday. A special cleaning device will be used on Tuesday to remove the oil from the joints. In order to ensure that the road is completely cleaned, the renewal of guardrails, joints and edge strips are also necessary. The cost of these repairs is still unclear.

The traffic situation in Berlin

The incident on the A2 is not only important for drivers in the region, but also currently for the entire traffic situation. In Berlin, for example, the police are regularly employed by a large number of traffic accidents that are documented in the daily police reports. According to Landesverkehrwacht Berlin, monthly statistics on road traffic accidents are published and often speak of illegal car racing or resistance to traffic controls. The accident statistics not only differentiate according to accidental accidents, but also according to those involved in the accident, such as children or cyclists.

Interestingly, a report on traffic safety in Berlin shows that despite the increase in the car stock to over 1.23 million vehicles in 2022, the degree of motorization per 1,000 inhabitants has dropped. This could indicate that fewer people fall back on the car on the way to work or leisure activities, although the number of procedures in traffic criminal matters has remained constant in recent years.

developments in Europe

at European level, traffic safety is an equally pressing topic. Every year, thousands of people lose their lives in traffic accidents or are seriously injured. [Europarl] (https://www.europarl.europa.eu/topics/de/article/20190410sto36615/ Verkehrsstatistiken-in-Eu-Infographik) reports that between 2010 and 2020 the number of traffic dead in Europe could be reduced, which corresponds to a significant progress in traffic safety. Nevertheless, the number of accidents are still worrying, especially since the severity and the circumstances of the accidents can differ greatly.

In this context, it is important to take a look at the young driver's share. Even though only 12 percent of the traffic fatalities were between 18 and 24 years old in 2018, it can be seen that this age group is a high risk group, especially in connection with uncertain driving practices.

It remains to be hoped that the number of accidents can be reliably reduced by increasing enlightenment and secure traffic measures, and that drivers in the region, even after this recent incident, are on the move with a healthy level of caution and sense of responsibility.
