Friendship in the Weimar triangle: Germany, France and Poland united!
Berlin, Deutschland - In Berlin, politicians from Germany, France and Poland discussed current challenges and future cooperation as part of the friendship groups of the Federal Council and the French Senate on July 2 and 3, 2025. The topics ranged from Franco-German cooperation to developments in the European Union and the international competitiveness of both countries. Anke Rehlinger, the Prime Minister of Saarland, and Senator Le Gleut led the talks that should set a clear sign of the close connection between the three nations. On the afternoon of July 3, the first joint meeting of the friendship groups took place as part of the Weimar triangle, in which representatives of the six friend groups took part.
The Franco-German friendship group of the Federal Council, which has been organizing annual meetings with the corresponding group in the French Senate since its foundation in 1996, has proven itself as a successful forum to promote political exchange. The last meeting took place in Paris in October 2024, whereby these meetings serve to represent mutual interests and to develop a common perspective for Europe. The goals of the Weimar triangle
originally launched in order to strengthen the relationship between Germany and Poland through the experiences of the Franco-German partnership, the Weimar triangle has developed since Poland in 2004. Today it serves as a forum for voting against important European negotiations. The last summit at the level of State Fund took place on June 12, 2023 in Paris, where topics such as the support of Ukraine, NATO expansion and the European neighborhood policy came up. On March 22, 2022, there were last discussions on the level of the Foreign Ministry about the challenges of the Ukraine secretary and the French EU Council Presidency.
The trilateral activities are not only limited to political questions. Scientific collaborations, such as the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), offer students the opportunity to gain international experiences in the partner states. In addition, joint research projects have been promoted since 2015 to strengthen political and social dialogue.

The friendship groups and the initiatives of the Weimar triangle reflect a lively exchange and the endeavor to promote European communication. The event of the Franco-German Cultural Council shows in December 2021 and the international youth summit that the younger generation is also included in the future planning. The youth summit 2023, which took place in Lille in July, addressed the challenges of the energy transition and testifies to an growing awareness of ecological questions.
