Julian Rosefeldt: Revolutionary Art in Berlin - exhibition starts now!
Hardenbergstraße 22–24, 10623 Berlin, Deutschland - The artistic world of Cologne will be enriched with a fascinating exhibition in the coming months. Under the title "Julian Rosefeldt. Nothing is original", C/O Berlin From May 24, 2025, an insight into the world of the renowned film artist is given. The prologue of the exhibition is opened by a quote from the filmmaker Jim Jarmusch: "Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuel your imagination." This statement focuses on the central topic of the show: the exploration of Julian Rosefeldt's way of working, which was born in Munich in 1965.
The heart of the exhibition is part 13 of the 13-channel film stall "Manifesto", which Rosefeldt created between 2014 and 2015. In this impressive work, the Oscar-decorated actress Cate Blanchett performs fragments from important artistic manifestos of the 20th century in 13 different roles. Not only the role of the artist is questioned in contemporary society, but also referred to the inspiration of futurists, dadaists, fluxus artists and other important movement, such as the website by Julian Rosefeldt reveals.
A look at Rosefeldt's career
Rosefeldt studied architecture in Munich and Barcelona and completed his studies in 1994. Already in his early works, such as "Archive of Archives" (1995) and "Detonation Germany" (1996-1999), he deals intensively with city rooms and repressed stories. From 2000, the artist turned to media archeological projects that focused on mass media narrative constructions and created the first spatial film stalls. Works like "American Night" (2008/2009) illuminate the Western genre and its influence on the American self-image.
The exhibition spans the bow over three decades and includes “Manifesto” also sketches, storyboards and making-of-showing of various projects. Rosefeldt's works not only offer a deep insight into identity formation and social norms, but also address the traces of the Nazi era in German national feeling. Work like "My home is a dark, cloudy country" (2011) and "The Ship of Fools" (2007), which deal with these topics, are particularly noteworthy.
the installation art in focus
The exhibition also underlines the importance of installation as an artistic form of representation, which is characterized by a conceptual approach. In contrast to narrative room productions, the installation often deals with the context in which it is presented. As already described in Wikipedia , the installation plays with different materials, light, sound and movement, and is often shown on large group exhibitions such as the Biennale from Venice or Documenta in Kassel.
The exhibition duration in the C/O Berlin Foundation extends until September 16, 2025. The show is open every day from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. It is worth taking a closer look at the work of Julian Rosefeldt, who not only shed light on their cultural contexts, but also toast important discussions about the role of the artist in today's society.
