Climate strike in Berlin: Stop the gas expansion now demanded!

In Germany, the time for waiting is over - the climate crisis is a current reality that can no longer be ignored. Current events such as floods, destroyed villages, forest fires and heat waves show once again: There is something going on. Millions of people are losing not only their livelihoods, but also their homes and crops as we move into a future marked by drastic species extinction. The [[Fridays for Future]](https://fridaysforfuture.berlin/klimastreik-am-20-09-2025/) movement is therefore calling for a major climate strike on September 20, 2025 to put pressure on politicians and demand a serious exit from fossil fuels.

Despite the alarming situation, the political response falls short of expectations. It is repeatedly criticized that the government has not taken consistent action against fossil fuels over the years. Dependence on gas in particular is castigated as a step backwards because it is sold as a “bridging technology”, while many voices are calling for clearer steps to be taken towards a sustainable energy transition.

Demands and demonstration

Climate strike organizers are calling for an immediate halt to gas expansion, including no new drilling or deals. Instead, the focus should be on the consistent expansion of renewable energies in order to enable a socially just energy transition. A line should also be drawn under lobbying in the ministries, which is related to Economics Minister Katherina Reiche and her connections to the gas lobby.

The demonstration in Berlin, which begins at Invalidenpark at 12:00 p.m., aims to raise people's awareness and persuade political decision-makers to finally set a clearer course. The demand is: real measures to combat the climate crisis and a faster transition to renewable energies.

Energy transition and sustainable solutions

But what does it take to make real progress? We must keep in mind that the last German nuclear power plant was shut down in 2023 and that electricity prices and CO2 emissions have fallen since then, as the [[Environmental Institute]](https://umweltinstitut.org/energie-und-klima/faktencheck-klimakritik-und-energiewende/) explains. The goal is clear: 100% renewable energy in Germany. The expansion of onshore and offshore wind turbines, which already have significant capacities and are to be continuously expanded, plays a central role here. Photovoltaic systems are also essential – both on roofs and in solar parks. Funding programs and falling costs make installation even easier.

However, a holistic approach is necessary: increase energy efficiency, integrate energy storage and create a flexible energy market model that favors renewable energy while gradually reducing fossil fuels. Currently there is often a lack of political support and social acceptance, which makes the implementation of the energy transition more difficult.

Ultimately, the energy transition without nuclear power is not only a contribution to climate protection, but also a long-term guarantee for security of supply and a reduction in environmental pollution. However, despite our confidence, we needed significant investment and international collaboration to achieve these ambitious goals.

On September 20, 2025, people are invited to raise their voices together. It is time to stand up for our future, for future generations and demand real change.
