Public transport shock for Berlin: ticket prices will rise drastically from January 2026!

In Berlin and Brandenburg there will be noticeable price increases in local public transport from January 2026. Again RBB reported, ticket prices increase by an average of 6.08%. This means that in the future passengers will have to dig deeper into their pockets in order to continue to get from A to B comfortably.

The single ticket in the AB fare zone will be increased to at least 4.00 euros, while it is currently 3.80 euros. There is also reason for Potsdam users to be concerned: here the ticket could even rise to over 3.00 euros, where it is currently 2.80 euros. The price adjustments are based on the development of consumer prices over the last five years.

Important changes to ticket offers

The tariff reform also brings with it some cuts. Several ticket offers will be abolished, including the popular annual and 7-day tickets as well as the VBB subscription 65plus. The 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. cards are also no longer available. The BC price tiers, previously available in several cities such as Berlin, Potsdam and Frankfurt (Oder), are also disappearing, meaning customers will now have to switch to an ABC ticket. A new tenant ticket is also being planned for Frankfurt (Oder) to meet the needs of residents.

Another point that is important for students: The semester ticket increases from 226.20 euros to 240 euros for half a year in Berlin and Elstal. The new VBB boss Christoph Heuing, who had already pointed out the need for this price increase in July, emphasized the sharp increase in costs as the decisive reason.

A look beyond the borders – price increases elsewhere too

The increase in ticket prices is not just a phenomenon in Berlin. Passengers in other German cities also have to expect similar adjustments. Numerous transport associations, including the Rhine-Ruhr transport association and the Munich Transport Association have already announced price increases on January 1, 2024. In the Rhine-Ruhr area, for example, a single ticket will cost between 3.30 euros and 17.90 euros - this depends on the route in question.

In Augsburg, for example, ticket prices are increasing by an average of 12.7%, while an increase of 10.4% is planned in the Rhein-Sieg transport association. The reason for all these adjustments is the significant increases in energy and personnel costs, which also affect ticket prices.

For many commuters and passengers, it will be worthwhile to carefully examine the offers and options in order to have a good hand in future fare decisions. Looking ahead to the coming year, it is more necessary than ever to rethink your mobility strategy and prepare yourself optimally for the changes in local public transport.
