Seriously injured after tram accident in Berlin-Lichtenberg: gas bottles in play!
A serious traffic accident in Berlin-Lichtenberg on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. put a 66-year-old van driver in danger of death. The man was driving north on Möllendorffstrasse and intended to make a traffic-contrary turn shortly before Rudolf-Reusch-Strasse. There was a collision with an oncoming tram, which led to a dramatic situation. The driver was trapped in the vehicle and suffered serious head injuries. Fortunately, he was able to free himself from the transporter and alert the rescue workers, as rbb24 reports.
The consequences of the accident were significant: the 66-year-old was immediately taken to hospital for inpatient treatment. The 58-year-old tram driver, who was also affected by the accident, suffered minor injuries and shock.
Risk from gas bottles
What made the circumstances of the accident particularly explosive was that the van was carrying several gas bottles. The emergency services had them brought to safety to avoid further danger. Möllendorffstrasse remained completely closed to car and tram traffic in the area of the accident site until around 11 p.m.
This accident is not the first of its kind in the region. A similar incident occurred near Alexanderplatz on Tuesday evening. There, a coach collided with a tram, leaving the bus driver seriously injured and five tram passengers, including school children, slightly injured Daily Mirror reported.
The accumulation of such accidents in such a short period of time raises questions and should remind all road users of their responsibility to drive safely and obey traffic rules. Even though the 66-year-old was apparently very lucky in his misfortune, the incident makes it clear that extreme caution is always required on our roads.
