Strong storm over Berlin: Injuries and chaos in S-Bahn traffic!

In Berlin, a violent storm hit the city on Thursday evening and caused chaos. The storms reached the capital around 6 p.m. and resulted in the fire department being called out over 500 times. While the fire department reported 330 weather-related operations at 7:30 p.m., the numbers continued to rise. The districts of Spandau-Nord, Heiligensee and Tegel were particularly affected. Some responses to the emergency call centers went unanswered due to overload, which led to delays in operations. Tagesspiegel also reports that the S-Bahn had to stop traffic across the entire network around 6:30 p.m.

The extreme winds brought gusts of up to 110 km/h, which was already documented before the storm in a warning level of red, or level 3 of 4, by the German Weather Service (DWD). There were further operations in the area surrounding Berlin, with a tragic event occurring in Heiligensee: one person was injured by a falling part of a tree. In Potsdam, other people, including a woman, suffered serious injuries, bringing the total number of injured to several. Unfortunately, a death was also reported, which underlines the severity of the storm ZDF.

The traffic and the consequences

The effects of the storm were clearly noticeable on the transport network. While the S-Bahn was completely suspended around 6:30 p.m., traffic only slowly resumed from 7:30 p.m., but many lines were severely restricted. Fallen trees led to blockages on several routes, especially during rush hour traffic. There were also regional and long-distance transport restrictions, and Deutsche Bahn and the Berlin S-Bahn did not expect operations to run as planned until Tuesday morning. There were several problems for buses and trams due to closed streets ZDF.

The severe weather forecast was already critical in advance and the fire brigade was well prepared, but unexpectedly strong gusts and flying branches pose a significant danger to everyone. Fortunately, BER Airport was spared any major irregularities, even though operations were briefly suspended during a thunderstorm Tagesspiegel.

The view

To put it succinctly: The storm front is moving further east and bringing thunderstorms and rain to Poland. Until the weather situation stabilizes, temperatures can be expected to drop to 19 to 16 degrees at night. As a result, the wind will become weaker and the weather experts are forecasting changeable weather of up to 24 degrees on Friday. Small backlogs in traffic could still persist, but there is a ray of hope in sight: rail traffic should run as planned again from Tuesday, which will significantly ease the situation of the last few days. At the moment, the warning situation remains exciting, the Unwetterzentrale team is always keeping an eye on all developments and providing information about what is happening around the clock.
