Barnim exceeds 200,000 inhabitants: an eye on the future!

The Barnim district has now reached a new milestone: the population has exceeded the 200,000 mark. Current reports from the residents' registration offices show that the region is enjoying growing popularity. District Administrator Daniel Kurth emphasizes how much Barnim has become more attractive as a place to live and work. The cities of Bernau and Eberswalde as well as the rural areas with good infrastructure and a high quality of life are particularly attracting new residents. According to the latest figures, a total of 200,121 people now live in the district, which underlines the dynamic development in recent years. This is also supported by data from the Federal Statistical Office, which documents the development of population numbers from 1997 to 2023.

The population in the individual cities and municipalities is distributed as follows:

  • Ahrensfelde: 14.591
  • Amt Britz-Chorin-Oderberg: 10.071
  • Stadt Bernau: 46.116
  • Amt Biesenthal-Barnim: 13.325
  • Stadt Eberswalde: 43.950
  • Amt Joachimsthal (Schorfheide): 5.368
  • Gemeinde Panketal: 21.314
  • Gemeinde Schorfheide: 10.503
  • Gemeinde Wandlitz: 25.082
  • Stadt Werneuchen: 9.801

Growth and responsibility

The growth represents not only a success for the Barnim district, but also an obligation. [Barnim.de](https://www.barnim.de/neuigkeiten/detail/bevoelkerungs growth-im-barnim) quotes District Administrator Kurth, who emphasizes how important it is to expand the infrastructure accordingly. Planned investments focus in particular on the education sector in order to develop new school locations and modernize and expand existing schools. The desired improvement in local public transport is intended to meet increasing mobility needs. The aim is to create climate-friendly alternatives and make the region fit for the future.

There is an inconsistent picture of population development in Germany. While some regions are growing strongly, others are struggling with emigration and falling birth rates. According to Demography Portal, almost three quarters of municipal associations experienced growth between 2017 and 2022, which is primarily due to migration gains. The rural regions in the south and northwest of Germany are recording above-average growth. In contrast, large areas of eastern Germany are battling a shrinking population characterized by emigration and high death rates.

Looking at developments in the Barnim district, it is clear that the region is actively working towards a positive future. The successes to date should not only be honored, but also seen as an incentive for future generations. We can only hope that this positive trend continues and that Barnim remains a good place to live and work.
