Biology Olympiad inspires 60 talents in Frankfurt (Oder)!

The smell of fresh flowers, the rustling of leaves and a hint of ambition in the air - that was the atmosphere that prevailed last week at the region's most exciting biology event. The eagerly awaited national final of the 30th Biology Olympiad took place at the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium in Frankfurt (Oder), where talented students from 30 schools competed for the best places. A total of 60 participants from grades 7 to 12 demonstrated circular knowledge and impressive practical skills.

The awards ceremony celebrated the most outstanding achievements and the audience can be really proud. The winners in each year group are:

  • 7. Klasse: Laura Sander (13) vom Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium Schwedt (Oder)
  • 8. Klasse: Wiebke Lenz (14) vom Marie-Curie-Gymnasium Ludwigsfelde
  • 9. Klasse: Elsa Lehnert (15) vom Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium Frankfurt (Oder)
  • 10. Klasse: David Vu (16) vom Max-Steenbeck-Gymnasium Cottbus
  • 11/12. Klasse: Leonore Fischer (18) vom Barnim-Gymnasium Bernau

Special awards and national qualifications

Another highlight of the event was the awarding of the special prize from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MBJS), which went to Leon Chen (18) from Weinberg Gymnasium Kleinmachnow. These talents have not only made a name for themselves, but have also qualified for the German national team at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), which takes place in Quezon City in the Philippines. A remarkable success! The reward for their hard work and passion is more than deserved.

The Olympiad offered the participants two days full of challenges. In grades 7 and 8, the focus was on, among other things, the red oak, tree of the year 2025. For years 9 and 10, complex topics such as the evolution of vision as well as genetics and anatomy of the eye were covered. They were even able to experiment in the IMD Oderland laboratory and get to know yeast as a model organism.

A complete success for education

Education Minister Steffen Freiberg not only congratulated the participants, but also the committed teachers, who always have an open ear and a helping hand for the young biology enthusiasts. The Biology Olympiad is much more than just a competition - it promotes interest in science and awakens enthusiasm for biological knowledge.

The event attracts numerous talents every year; 2,355 students took part in the first round, and 220 of them made it to the regional finals in Cottbus, Frankfurt (Oder), Kleinmachnow and Oranienburg. Such successes encourage participation in further competitions, for example in the 28th State Biology Olympiad, where the achievements of Djonja Voigt and Dennis Pult from class 11 were recognized. The event included various exciting activities and topics that go far beyond the classroom.

The young generation of scientists has great opportunities to prove themselves and develop a good hand for the future. Who knows, maybe we'll soon be close to the new explorers!
