Biology Olympiad inspires 60 talents in Frankfurt (Oder)!
Frankfurt (Oder), Deutschland - The scent of fresh flowers, the noise of leaves and a hint of ambition in the air - that was the atmosphere that prevailed last week at the region's most exciting biology event. At the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium in Frankfurt (Oder), the highly expected state finals of the 30th Biology Olympics took place, in which talented students from 30 schools fought for the best places. A total of 60 participants from classes 7 to 12 showed circular knowledge and impressive practical skills.
The award ceremony celebrated the most outstanding achievements, and the audience can be really proud. The winners in the respective grades are:
- 7. Class: Laura Sander (13) from the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium Schwedt (Oder)
- 8. Class: Wiebke Lenz (14) from the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium Ludwigsfelde
- 9. Class: Elsa Lehnert (15) from the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium Frankfurt (Oder)

special awards and national qualifications
Another highlight of the event was the award of the special prize of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MBJS), which went to Leon Chen (18) from the Kleinmachnow Weinberg Gymnasium. These talents have not only made a name for themselves, but also qualified for the German national team of the International Biology Olympics (IBO), which takes place in Quezon City in the Philippines. A remarkable success! The reward for your hard work and passion is more than deserved.
The Olympics offered the participants two days full of challenges. In grades 7 and 8, the focus was on the red oak, tree of 2025. Complex topics such as the evolution of vision as well as genetics and anatomy of the eye were dealt with for born 9 and 10. Here they were even able to experiment in the IMD laboratory and get to know yeast as a model organism.
a complete success for education
Minister of Education Steffen Freiberg congratulated not only the participants, but also the committed teachers who always have an open ear and a helping hand for the young biology enthusiasts. The Biology Olympics is much more than just a competition - it promotes interest in natural sciences and arouses enthusiasm for biological knowledge.
The event attracts numerous talents every year; 2,355 students took part in the first round, and 220 of them made it to the regional finals in Cottbus, Frankfurt (Oder), Kleinmachnow and Oranienburg. Such successes encourage other competitions, for example in the 28th State Biology Olympics, in which Djonja Voigt and Dennis Pult's performance were recognized from class 11. The competition also took place on May 31, 2023 at the Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Gymnasium and gave the participants the valuable opportunity to qualify for the International Biology Olympics. The event included various exciting activities and topics that go far beyond the classroom.
The young generation of scientists has great opportunities to prove themselves and to develop a good knack for the future. Who knows, maybe we will soon be very close to the new explorers!
