Dramatic fires in Barnim: Injured people and high property damage!
On September 10, 2025, the fire department was called to Mühlenbecker Straße when the fire alarm system of an apartment building sounded the alarm. Smoke was coming from an apartment, requiring immediate action. Six people had to be evacuated, including a 59-year-old tenant, a 31-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man who suffered minor injuries in the incident. The criminal police have started an investigation and are assuming negligent arson. This could mean that it is an unintentional arson, which is punishable under the provisions of the Criminal Code (§ 306d), as the Juracademy explains.
Later that same day, the fire department responded to Dorfstrasse in Grüntal around 11 p.m. A barn there burst into flames for reasons that are still unknown. There were straw bales, tools, a photovoltaic system and an older car in the barn, which estimates the total damage at around 120,000 euros. A 60-year-old woman suffered minor injuries in this incident. The fire brigade was able to burn down the building in a controlled manner and prevented the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings, which averted greater damage.
Arson: A recurring problem
The problem of arson in Germany is not new. According to statistics from the Federal Criminal Police Office, police cases of arson were recorded several times between 2013 and 2024. A look at the Statista shows that there has been a continuous increase in arsons. The associated dangers for people and property are enormous. In case law, a distinction is made between different forms of arson, which are dealt with in paragraphs 306 and 306a of the Criminal Code. These laws protect not only property but also physical integrity by providing criminal penalties for negligent setting of fires.
The incidents in Cologne urgently underline the importance of fire protection measures and education about the dangers of arson. As investigations into ongoing cases continue, it remains to be seen what additional information will emerge about the background to these events. The fire brigade, the police and the legal institutions are called upon to hold the actors accountable and to protect citizens.
