Regional office for climate protection started: Brandenburg relies on nature!
in Brandenburg something happens in the field of natural climate protection. Today the new regional office for natural climate protection has started its work. This office, which is funded by the federal government and has its place in the Ministry of Agriculture and Nutritional Economy, Environment and Consumer Protection, will be an important interface for all actors who deal with the environment. The main tasks include funding advice and the coordination between the federal, state, municipalities and other private individuals and associations. Under the motto "Nature protects us", the office aims to use the positive effects of intact natural systems in order to bind greenhouse gases and at the same time to promote biodiversity. This is also urgently needed, because according to Environmental Federal Agency are the climate change and the loss of biodiversity that we can only manage with sustainable solutions.
The action program of natural climate protection (Ank) is a central component, the extent of which cannot hide: With a total financing of 3.5 billion euros by 2028, the program provides for 10 fields of action and 69 measures. Brandenburg has already raised 46 million euros from this pot, which corresponds to around 6.6 percent of the funding awarded by the end of 2024. A shining example of successful projects is the pilot project moor floor protection (Blumo), which claims 20 percent of the funding for Brandenburg. Here, a location of low bogs will be worked on by 2031.
The advantages of natural systems
What can natural climate protection specifically cause? The promotion and protection of forests, bogs and floors are not only good for the climate, but also for people. These natural systems not only store CO2, they also offer protection against floods and drought. In heavy rain, they act as water reservoirs, while in dry times they act like natural water storage. This knowledge is also conveyed in the campaign videos on natuerlicher-klimaschutz.de that show the value of our nature for climate protection.
Nature helps us to weaken the consequences of climate change. According to Environmental Office , natural-based solutions (NBS) are a cheaper way to combat climate change-compared to technical approaches. They aim to improve human well -being and at the same time to capitalize on nature events. Measures such as the reproduction or the renaturation of coastal ecosystems belong to the category of the NBS and are essential in the fight against climate change.
contact and participate
The regional office is at the side of all Brandenburgers who want to use the potential for climate protection. Municipalities have already applied for over 5 percent of the funding for “natural climate protection in municipalities”. Interested parties have the opportunity to find out more at the office. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact ank-regionalbuero@mleuv.brandenburg.de or by phone at 0331 866-7319 In summary, it can be said that natural climate protection is very important in Brandenburg and opens up many opportunities. It remains to be seen how the projects develop and what positive effects they will bring to climate and biodiversity.
