Berlin e-cars: charging infrastructure is growing rapidly – what does the future hold?

Electromobility continues to gain momentum in Germany! The expansion of the charging infrastructure for electric cars in Berlin and Brandenburg is in full swing. So reported RBB24 that Berlin already has 6,200 public charging points as of October 1, 2025. Among these there are more than 980 fast charging points, which corresponds to an increase of 15% compared to the previous year. There are almost 3,000 charging points in Brandenburg, of which around 1,400 are fast charging stations - an increase of 14% compared to 2024.

The numbers not only show the expansion, but also a growing interest in electric cars. In Berlin there are now 12.7 electric cars per charging point, while in Brandenburg there are 14.7. This puts Berlin in fifth place and Brandenburg in eighth place in a nationwide comparison. If we look at the fast charging stations, Brandenburg takes fifth place with 49.4 cars per charging station, while Berlin comes in twelfth with 83.9 cars per charging station.

The challenges of the charging infrastructure

However, a look behind the scenes shows that there are still many hurdles to overcome. Nationwide, the average utilization of public charging points is currently 9.6%, but between October 2024 and March 2025 only 8.7% of charging processes use public stations. It is interesting that around 85% of all charging processes take place in private areas. But access to private charging is severely limited: only 4% of tenants in Germany have the opportunity to charge privately. In Berlin, 60% of tenants do not have a private parking space.
In addition, public charging is often more expensive than charging at home, which deters many potential electric car owners.

One solution could be to promote charging infrastructure in apartment buildings. So far, at the beginning of 2023, only 7% of apartment buildings with more than ten parking spaces had a wallbox or charging station. The federal government has launched the “Charging Infrastructure 2030 Master Plan,” which includes 40 measures to accelerate expansion while improving economic profitability for operators.

Public charging infrastructure and private initiatives

A look at developments in Berlin shows that at the end of the second quarter of 2024, more than 4,700 publicly accessible charging points were in operation. Over 2,500 of these charging points are located on public streets and squares. In 2023, around 1,200 new charging points have already been installed in public spaces. The responsibility for creating this infrastructure lies largely with the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment. Private operators are also active and are building new charging infrastructure, which is supported by a uniform charging infrastructure concept.

This initiative allows non-discriminatory access for all mobility service providers, so that e-vehicle users can charge at any operator's charging station in public spaces under the agreed conditions.

A happy time lies ahead for electric car drivers and those who would like to become one. The developments in electromobility could prove to be groundbreaking for the future of our cities.
