Language proficiency assessment: An important step for all children

Children who have not been identified as needing language support can be exempted from participation, explains the Brandenburg education website. The language proficiency assessment often takes place directly in the daycare center and serves to identify language problems at an early stage. Parents should expect to receive confirmation of participation, which must be presented when registering at primary school.
However, the situation is somewhat more complicated for children with a migrant background. They also take part in the language proficiency assessment, although the results can vary depending on the children's German skills. If the vocabulary is still limited, the test may have to be stopped and a need for language support will be determined. Various funding options are available here, from external language courses to closer support in day-to-day daycare.
Parents are responsible: The role of language support
An important goal of language proficiency assessment is individual support. Parents whose children do not take part in the language proficiency assessment should seek advice, as schools can ask them to take the tests later. This applies not only to children who live in Brandenburg, but also to those who have disabilities in their language development or who go to therapy. The fact is: every child deserves the chance to be optimally supported and to find their own voice in the new phase of life.
