Mayoral election in Brandenburg an der Havel: Who will lead the city?
Next Sunday there will be big elections in Brandenburg an der Havel! Six candidates are ready to convince the electorate and establish themselves as the new mayor. The city, with its 74,000 inhabitants, is experiencing, probably not for the first time, an exciting election campaign that not only focuses on the future of the municipality, but also on citizens' commitment to local issues. Loud RBB24 A total of 60,000 people have the right to vote.
The following candidates are running in this year's election:
- Axel Brösicke (AfD), Jahrgang 1976, Industriemechaniker
- Steffen Scheller (CDU), Jahrgang 1969, aktueller Oberbürgermeister
- Daniel Keip (SPD), Jahrgang 1986, Verwaltungswissenschaftler

- Steffen Tepper (Wählergruppe “Der Unabhängige”), Jahrgang 1986, Verwaltungsfachwirt

Election programs in comparison
The candidates' election programs show many points of contact when it comes to central issues. Particular attention is paid to the urgently needed improvement of the dilapidated bridges and local public transport, both of which have been under discussion for years. “We have to find solutions that are implemented quickly,” emphasizes Keip (SPD), while Brösicke (AfD) calls for the promotion of social housing and the use of urban areas. Patz also wants to ensure that funding is used more efficiently. Zureck plans to promote e-mobility and expand bicycle lanes, which would fit well with our city's environmentally conscious orientation.
Another topic that keeps coming up in conversations surrounding the election concerns the recruitment of skilled workers. This is of great importance for the industrial companies in the region; ZF works council Sandro Hoffmann emphasizes the need for better childcare times in daycare centers. The upcoming elections also shed light on the social challenges that Brandenburg an der Havel faces.
Runoff election pre-programmed?
In order for one of the candidates to occupy the town hall, an absolute majority is required - more than 50 percent of the votes. If this cannot be achieved, a runoff election between the two best placed candidates will take place on November 23rd. So far, the election programs point to a balanced race, which does not rule out the possibility of a runoff election.
The last mayoral elections in Brandenburg showed that voter turnout often remains below expectations. One reason for this could be the lack of knowledge about the role of the mayor. It often remains difficult to design election programs in such a way that they really mobilize the electorate.
On Monday evening, voters will have the opportunity to get to know all the candidates at the election forum in the Brandenburg Theater, where they will present their plans and visions. A live broadcast is also offered, so that no one interested has to miss the event. It will be exciting to see who will ultimately win the elections - the citizens of Brandenburg an der Havel are called upon to cast their votes!
