Feldheim takes off: new wind turbines and viewing platform by 2029!
The small but beautiful village of Feldheim in Brandenburg is facing an exciting time of change. A new era is being worked on here, which is intended to modernize the already energy self-sufficient village. The Energiequelle company has big plans: it will dismantle the wind turbines, which are over 25 years old, and replace them with eight larger wind turbines. While the installed capacity is reduced from 64 to 56 megawatts, the hub heights increase to an impressive 175 meters. Wind power has a long tradition in Feldheim, which is now being carried out [maz-online.de]. Some of the old wind turbines continue to be used, which supports the sustainability of the measures.
The plans are already in local discussion; The city council of Treuenbrietzen must approve the new development plan. It's not just the authorities who are involved here; citizens also have the opportunity to express their opinions before approval is granted in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act. The viewing platform, which is also planned, will be built on an Enercon E-70 tower at a height of around 100 meters. It should not only offer a breathtaking view of the surrounding area, but also be used as a venue for meetings and team building.
A pioneer in renewable energy
Feldheim is considered the first energy self-sufficient village in Germany and is therefore truly unique. It proudly positions itself with a 100 percent renewable energy supply. The village benefits from 55 wind turbines, a biogas plant, a wood chip heating system and a solar park and produces more electricity than it consumes. The excess energy supply is fed into the public grid, which was also confirmed by dstgb.de. With an association of 130 citizens who invest as shareholders in Feldheim Energie GmbH & Co KG, the energy transition is kept in citizens' hands here.
The successes of the Feldheim energy initiative to date are impressive: almost 250 million kWh of electricity are generated every year, which avoids CO2 emissions of around 166,750 tons. This makes the village a showcase project in the Havelland region and beyond. The planned changes, together with support from a regional power grid, will also bring other benefits, including annual revenue of around €175,000 from feed-in tariffs.
A look into the future
With the new visitor center, which will be part of the new viewing platform, Feldheim is strengthening its role as a center for environmental education and renewable energy. The New Energies Forum Feldheim not only offers educational tours and workshops, but also serves as a conference location for up to 150 people. Equipped with barrier-free access, it will provide valuable impetus to the community and beyond.
Official permission for these exciting projects is expected to be granted in late 2026, with commissioning planned for late 2029. The conversion and modernization of the wind turbines will be of great importance not only for Feldheim itself, but also for the entire region and the environment. The upcoming developments are part of a larger trend in which numerous municipalities in Germany are converting their energy supplies to renewable technologies. The AutGrid initiative, supported by the BMBF, analyzes these regional efforts to promote energy self-sufficiency in Germany, from which Feldheim also benefits, as Fraunhofer ISE reports.
