Brandenburg Medical School receives the right to award doctorates – a milestone!

The Brandenburg Medical School (MHB) has reached an important milestone: it is now the first non-state university in Brandenburg to have been awarded the right to award doctorates and habilitations. This was announced on October 16, 2025 by Science Minister Manja Schüle (SPD), who symbolically handed over a corresponding decision extending state recognition until 2031. The move is not only a great success for the university, but also a significant signal for the future development of its academic programs. [rbb24] reports that the MHB thus receives the right to award the academic degree of doctor in the subjects of human medicine and dentistry.

Since its founding in 2014, the MHB has developed into a state-recognized university that operates under municipal and non-profit sponsorship. There are currently around 1,000 students enrolled at the university who are training to become medical and psychological specialists in a practical environment. This is done in cooperation with around 30 hospitals and teaching practices in the Brandenburg region, which speaks for the quality and relevance of the training. [meetingpoint-brandenburg] emphasizes that a dental degree program will also be offered from the summer semester of 2024, which further diversifies the MHB's offerings.

State support and future prospects

The support of the state of Brandenburg will not go unnoticed. Between 2025 and 2029, a total of 27.6 million euros will flow into the university in the form of state funding. Minister Schüle expressed her joy about this ongoing support, which is intended to strengthen not only the study operations but also the research activities of the MHB. Professor Dr. Hans-Uwe Simon, President of the MHB, emphasized that the granting of doctoral and habilitation rights was an important step for the university and opened up further potential for research and teaching.

In its relatively short existence, the MHB has already trained an impressive core of specialists, and the new opportunities open the door to future scientific excellence. Thanks to the new law, the university will be able to advance its research projects independently and offer its students even more perspectives.
