New residential area in Brandenburg: Citizens discuss future plans!
The city of Brandenburg an der Havel is taking big steps towards sustainable urban development, because on June 25, 2025, the city council decided to draw up the development plan for the “Friedrich-Engels-Straße / Einsteinstraße residential area”. This planning focuses on an approximately 5.1 hectare area in the rolling mill settlement, which extends west of the city center between Einsteinstrasse in the north and Friedrich-Engels-Strasse in the east. The aim is to set the course for a modern residential area that takes into account different building typologies and offers space for social infrastructure as well as senior-friendly living and care facilities.
The planned neighborhood also envisages the establishment of a local supplier that will meet the daily needs of future residents. This is part of a broader approach that focuses on citizen participation. A citizen information event took place on October 6, 2025 in the Havelschule, at which Mayor Michael Müller and representatives of the administration and the CESA planning office explained the current status of planning to those present. Around 60 citizens took the opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions. This illustrates how important public involvement is for such projects.
Citizen participation in focus
As the Planning Aids Bavaria explain, early public participation is very important. This makes it possible to discuss the goals and expected effects of the planning at an early stage. In this way, citizens' critical perspectives on changes that arise, for example, from building renovations or infrastructural measures can also be taken into account. Citizen engagement could have a significant influence on the course of planning.
The importance of citizen participation is also reinforced by the experiences from ProjectCity. According to [NHW](https://www.nhw.de/magazin/artikel/buerger Beteiligung-in-der-projektstadt), this initiative acts as a manager and impetus to motivate residents to actively participate in the change. Particular emphasis is placed on climate-resilient urban development in order to meet the challenges of climate change. Measures to improve mobility, including the promotion of public transport and cycling, are also part of these strategic approaches.
Citizens' willingness to engage in dialogue and active participation are therefore essential in order to create a residential area that is not only structurally impressive, but also meets social and ecological needs. All suggestions and information from the citizen information event will be incorporated into the further processing of the development plan, which means that the city of Brandenburg an der Havel shows that it takes its citizens seriously and integrates their opinions into decision-making processes.
The official presentation and the minutes of the event are available on the City of Brandenburg website, which represents a further step towards transparent communication and proximity to citizens.
