Brandenburg lights up: New LED lanterns for more safety in the city!

Brandenburg an der Havel is taking a big step towards climate neutrality by converting its street lighting. On October 15, 2025, the city will start installing eight new pole lights at the pedestrian crossings on Jacobstrasse and Wilhelmsdorfer Strasse. This project, which costs around 80,000 euros, aims to significantly improve the illumination of the crossing areas and adjacent installation areas. The new technology uses modern LED technology, which is not only energy efficient but is also increasingly being used in urban areas to increase safety standards.

The extensive package of measures for the energy-efficient renovation of public lighting is financially supported by the state of Brandenburg. A total of 711,232 euros is available, as shown in the funding notification dated April 30, 2024. The focus is particularly on retrofitting in commercial areas, where over 700 light points are to be replaced with new LED lights. Completely replacing the lamp heads will help maximize energy savings while improving the quality of lighting.

Green electricity and cost savings

The economic aspect of the conversion is also important. The increase in electricity costs for city lighting should not be underestimated - from 650,000 euros in 2022 to an estimated 1.4 million euros in 2023. The conversion of existing lamps to LED will make a significant difference Electricity savings of up to 40 percent expected. The current annual electricity consumption is around 954,000 euros, a value that can be reduced with the new technology.

In total, around 500 of more than 10,000 lanterns are to be converted in the first construction phase by the end of the year. The work is focused on areas that are more susceptible to repairs, including the commercial areas in Hohenstücken and Görden. If the first steps are successful, the city will continue to expand the project, reflecting the vision of greater security and a better quality of life for citizens.

Sustainable urban planning

But converting street lighting is not just a question of costs and efficiency, but also a crucial step in sustainable urban planning. The use of LED technology is considered a core element in creating a green and safe urban environment. This technology not only supports the city's sustainability goals, but also promotes smart city projects and long-term innovation strategies. LED street lighting plays a key role in not only reducing emissions but also improving the quality of life of local residents.

Overall, this will not only be important for achieving climate neutrality by 2045 in accordance with the “Integrated Energy and Climate Protection Concept” adopted in 2017, but also for creating safe, green and efficient urban spaces from which future generations will benefit.
