Cottbus: Pavement renovation on Eilenburger Straße from October 20th!

From October 20, 2025, we will be busy working on Eilenburger Straße in the Spremberger suburb. The focus is on around 450 square meters of sidewalk space, which will be completely renovated. The aim of this measure is clear: pedestrians should be able to travel safer and more barrier-free in the future. This repair work is expected to last until November 20, 2025, with the sidewalk being completely closed during the entire construction period to ensure safe implementation, as the city of Cottbus/Chóśebuz announced on its website cottbus.de.

The work not only includes the renewal of the sidewalk, but also a partial closure of the road, with a one-way system being set up. Road users are asked to adhere to the signs and detour regulations. These measures are financed from city funds and carried out by ALBA Lausitz GmbH. In parallel with the construction work, the city is asking residents and road users to understand the temporary restrictions.

Accessibility in focus

But what does this renewal actually mean for accessibility? The DIN 18040-1 standard provides information about how public traffic areas should be designed in order to be accessible to everyone. Accordingly, sidewalks must be designed so that they have a wide, firm and level surface. It is recommended that the sidewalks be at least 1.80 meters wide to allow for easy encounters with wheelchairs, strollers or walking aids. During the renovation work on Eilenburger Straße, care will be taken to ensure that these standards are adhered to, so that even people with limited mobility can use the path without difficulty. This corresponds to the general requirement for barrier-free infrastructure, as the website nullsperr.de explains.

In addition, care is taken to ensure that both the space required and suitable movement areas are available for all users. For movement areas with a change of direction, widths of at least 150 cm and meeting areas of 180 x 180 cm after a maximum of 15 meters apply to ensure safe and comfortable coexistence. Another important aspect is the condition of the sidewalk, which must be non-slip, non-slip and tactile in order to be safe for all road users.

These measures not only increase security, but also take an important step towards sustainability and equal access for all citizens. In short: This is not just renovating a sidewalk, but creating a small piece of quality of life for everyone.
