Energie Cottbus has to pay a fine of 42,000 euros for pyrotechnic offenses!
The latest developments surrounding FC Energie Cottbus are a topic of conversation. On July 8, 2025, the DFB sports court decided to impose a fine of 42,000 euros on the club. The reason for this is the unsportsmanlike behavior of his supporters, which was shown during the away game against Hansa Rostock on May 10th. At least 120 pyrotechnic objects were ignited, including 75 Bengali flares during the 47th minute of the game, in which Cottbus won the match 3-1. As Tagesspiegel reports, the penalty must also be viewed from the perspective of security: 14,000 euros of the fine can be used for your own security and violence prevention measures.
But that is not the only incident that has occupied Cottbus in the last few weeks. A further look at the recent past shows that the DFB sports court has already prosecuted the club for unsportsmanlike behavior on the part of its supporters. As part of the relegation games against SpVgg Unterhaching, 49 pyrotechnic objects were burned in the first leg, which resulted in a total fine of 35,200 euros, as Niederlausitz Current describes in detail. There, too, part of the penalty could be used for security-related measures.
A heavy burden for the club
The repeated financial penalties and incidents pose a serious problem for FC Energie Cottbus. President Sebastian Lemke expressed concern about the impact on the club's account and the club's financial goals. He appealed to the fans to loudly support the team, but at the same time to refrain from unsportsmanlike behavior. This behavior, such as setting off pyrotechnics, is not only prohibited in German football, but can also have serious legal consequences. According to The Law Firm, violations could result in fines, stadium bans and even imprisonment.
Such incidents are not uncommon in the Bundesliga. With the awareness that the use of pyrotechnics can result in criminal prosecution as well as bringing the club into financial difficulties, the mood among fans is tense. The challenges, both sporting and financial, are not diminishing and raise questions about how the club will deal with this problem in the future. Dealing responsibly with one's own supporters and clear communication now seem more than necessary in order to emphasize the positive sides of football in the stadium and, above all, not to endanger sporting success.
